AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS

GERALDINE. Messrs J. Mundell and Co. repoit sales for the week ending Saturday, 24th May, 1884 : On Saturday last they held a cWring sale of stock, farming implements, etc., at Scotsburn, on account of the trustees in the estate of the late Mr John Heney. The day was inclement, but there was an average attendance of buyers, and with only a few exceptions every lot found buyers at very satisfactory prices. We have no private sales to record during the week, We wish to draw attention to our monthly sale on Wednesday, 4th June, entries for which are being received. TIMARU. Messrs Maclean aud Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Herses—Between 55 and 60 horses, consisting of a few very good draughts, about 25 medium, and the balance ordinary hacks, were to-day entered for sale. They have to report a dull demand, and prices much the same as last we?k, if anything a shade easier. They to-day sold 24 head, various classes, at the following prices :—Extra good draughts, up to £2B ; medium sorts, £l6 to *lB ; hacks, £8 to £l2. They invited owners of good hacks, desirous of disposing of them, to bring their horses to their yards on Thursday and Friday, a buyer for the export trade being in attendance ; but although a good number came forward they were not the sort required, and in consequence few lots were purchased, only some half a dozen having been sold at market quotations. Cattle —A considerably better enquiry was experienced for good store cattle at their fortnightly sale at the Washdyke yards last Tuesday, when a fair entry was received. They sold 11 good steers at £4 10s per head, 19 w«U forward steers and heifers from £2 8s to £5. 9 two-year-olds at 31s, 7 calves from 10s to 15s, 18 head mixed cattle from 32s 6d to £3, 7 cows from £3 to £3 12s 6d, 1 extra good dairy cow at £lO ss. Fat cattle—They h»ve placed several small lines at prices equal to about 17s 6d per 1001 b. Sheep—There is almost nothing doing in store sheep, and most of the lots booked for sale at the Washdyke on the 20th did not fiud buyers. They have an enquiry for a line of store crossbred hoggets. Fat sheep—- Privately they have placed a small of fat merino ewes at a satisfactory price. They quote prime mutton at aboat per lb. Wool, Skins, Hides, Tallow—They held their usual fortnightly sale on Wednesday, the 21st, an average entry coming to hand, all of which.found buyers at the following rates, viz.:— Best crossbred and merino skins from 2s to 3s ; medium, from Is 6d to 2s ; pelts, 4d to Sd ; 6 bales and 8 bags merino and crossbred wool from 4d to 6|d per lb ; hides, from 3d to 4d ; tallow, from 2d to2|d per lb. ENGLISH MABKETS. Lohdoic, May 23. Colonial breadstuffs continue dull. Adelaide wheat ex store, 41s ; New Zealand ditto, 35s to 40s ; Adelaide flour 28s. Australian leather, best sides ll^d. Wool—At to-day's auction a firm tone again prevailed. The catalogue comprised 12,500 bales. May 24. Australian Tallow Beef, average quality remains at 36a ; mutton has further declined 6d per cwt, and is now quoted at 38s 6(3, At to-day's wool sale 9000 bales were catalogued. The market continues firm. The value of wheat cargoes is unchanged, and the recent sales involve a loss to importers. The Press is jubilant and seems inclined to under-rate Australian wheat as compared with American. Superior greasy merinos and sound combing wools are steady ; medium crossbreds are Id and Victorian lower. 252,000 bales have been catalogued and 21,000 withdrawn.
