ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 15.
In the Bankruptcy division of the Supreme Court of Judicature, an order was granted to-day for the compulsory winding up of the affairs of the Oriental Bank Corporation. Mr Mclntyre’s Mining Company has not been floated, owing to the investors feeling some distrust as to the mining prospects. It is probable that an inspector will be sent out to report on the Maldon mines. Mr Mclntyre is a passenger for Australian by the Assam. May 16.
The military guard at the Birmingham Gaol has been increased so as to prevent any attempt to rescue the Fenian prisoners confined therein. This step has been taken in consequence of reports received by the authorities that the friends of the prisoners would probably make an effort to rescue them. M. Ferry, the French Premier, expresses his indignation at Prince Bismarck’s accusation that he is conniving at the betrayal of the military secrets of Germany. The Duke of Marlborough has agreed to accept the sum of £107,000 in commutation of the pension of £4OOO a year, which has been paid to himself and previous holders of the title since the date of the battle of Blenheim, 17C5. May 17.
In the cricket match Australian Eleven v. Oxford University, the Australians were defeated by seven wickets. The New Zealand Shipping Company and the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company have agreed to run steamers every alternate fortnight after October, Lord Roseberry, at Earl Granville’s request, has postponed the recidivists debate in the House of Lords, The French Government appear greatly irritated at the action of the Australian colonies in the matter. The Royal Geographical Society have presented to Sir P, D, Bell the gold medal awarded to Professor Yon Haast, of Christchurch, for his explorations of the Now Zealand Alps. The Court has directed the payment by the Oriental Bank of a sum of £90,000 lodged by the Japanese Government to redeem certain bonds. An autumn session of Parliament will be held if the House of Lords rejects the Bill for the extension of the franchise. Lord Randolph Churchill has been re-elected Chairman of the National Conservative Union. Berlin, May 15. Prince Bismarck has formally notified the British and Portuguese Ministers that the German Government cannot agree to recognise the treaty which, iu February last, was concluded between England and Portugal regarding the Congo district, on the Western African coast, as applying to German subjects who may be residents in the territory referred to in the treaty. May 16. The Bundesrath has voted an annual subsidy ot four million marks for a line of German mail steamers to Australia and tba East. St, Petersburg, May 16. Intelligence is to hand from Herat, Afghanistan, that the Turcomans resi dent there have formally tendered their submission to Russia, Capetown, May 15. The attempts which were made to float the steamer Bulli proved unsuccessful. The vessel, which went ashore at Paternoster Point on the Bth inst. when on a voyage from London to Sydney, has been driven on to the land by heavy seas, and is now expected to become a total wreck. May 16. Latest news from Zululand announces that an engagement has taken place near the border of the Reserves, between the Basutos and the friendly tribes, in which the latter were defeated, and Mr Osborne, the Resident Commissioner, has consequently been compelled to retreat to Cutuman ( sic). New York, May 15.
The panic on the Stock Exchange continues, and the effects are being rapidly felt over an incur a ing area. The President of the Stock Exchange has become insolvent, and it is believed that bis liabilities are heavy.
The New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, have received the following cable message :—“ Ruapehu, 8,8,, arrived at Plymouth, all well. Actual steaming time from Lyttelton, 37 days 20 hours. She will leave London for N.Z. ports on 29th inst. lonic follows, 17th June.” — AUSTRALIAN GABLE. Sydney, May 16. The number of unemployed in this city is- diminishing. Large numbers have refused the work offered them by the Government.
