Major Atkinson will address a public meeting at the Thames to-night. Yesterday night ho address 1 a meeting at Auckland. At a public meeting at Gisborne on Saturday morning, Mr Rees absolutely refus~d to retire, saying any local man would have more weight for the distuct in the House than Sir Jalius Yogel, r - it was notorious that the latter only desired to go there to prosecute his claim on the Government. It is said that Sir Julius Vogel will now drop out, and the t-I'-ee local men will ct. y out the contest. The name of Sir Julias Vogel app rs as a freeholder for Waikour'ti. At Kaiapoi on Friday, the Hon. E. Richa-dson was elected member of the General Assembly unopposed. Mr E. G. Wright, the member for Ashburton, announces that he has forward'd his resignation to the Speaker. The reason given is illhea.th. Mr J. C. Wason intend,; Standing for the Ashburton seat, vacant by the resignation of Mr E. G. Wright. He addressed the electors at Oliertsey last Saturday night. He is in favor of local Railway Boards and against nationalisation of the land and perpotu* 1 lease . He received a vote of thanks.
