THE GALE.
South Canterbury was visited by a ▼ery severe gale yesterday. It was so severe that the streets of Temuka were almost impassable, so dense were the clouds of dust that were flying about in all directions. The wind broke the skylight in Mr Gray’s auction rooms, threw down a windmill erected by Messrs Henry and Findlay on their section, also the bell-tower at the fire brigade station, and a tree that was growing near the Bank of New Zealand.. The tree fell against one of the windows of the Bank, and completely wrecked it. The belltower was torn from the ground, and thrown down the declivity on the western side. It was taken about five yards away. Many outbuildings were overturned. A shower of rain had the affect of moderating the fury of the gale in the afternoon. Last night flashes of lightning were very Irequent, and there was every appearance of stormy weather.
