The Ceylon Government will guarantee the Oriental Bank currency in Ceylon. Several Australian banks are treating for the purchase of the Bank’s business, including the premises in Singapore and Hong Kong, the banks undertaking to pay the notes that are in circulation. The gunboats ordered by the Queensland Government were launched on the Tyne to-day, and have been name! the Palama and Gagindah. The Aborigies Protection Society have resolved to render the visit of ‘ King ’ Tav hiao and other chiefs a pleasant one, and in a mwiner*beneficial to the Natives. May 7. Her Majesty the Queen left Darmstadt yesterday en route for England. In the House of Commons last night, a resolution in favor of legalising marriage with a deceased wife’s sister passed by a substantial majority. It is known that the Egyptian Government has sent a communication to the British Foreign Minister, in which it claims to have a voice in the deliberations of the projected Conference on Egyptian affairs. The Australian cricketers have arranged for an additional match agaimst an All-Englaod Eleven, and it will be played on Kensington Oval on September 11th, The reported rupture between France and Morocco is denied. ■ Tenders for the £.'500,006' 4 per cent, loan for Tasmania were opened to-day, and were found to amount to a total of £2,250,000. Tenders at 100 j will receive 17 per cent, of the allotment, and tenders above that price in full. Intelligence has been received that the steamship State of Florida, trading between Glasgow and America, which is several days overdue, came into collision with a barque in the Atlantic, and sank almost immediately. Of 167 souls on board only 44 were rescued by the barque, or saved in the steamer’s boats.
Thomas Hugh Shortland, an Australian barrister, has been arrested at Plymouth, charged with the murder of his wife, with whom he had been living until a recent date. May 8. Her Majesty the Queen arrived at Windsor Castle from Darmstadt yeater day evening. The Oriental Bank Corporation, which suspended payment on the 3rd inst., was compelled to adopt that course in consequence of the rapid and unexpected withdrawals of deposits at its Eastern branches. The examination which has been already made of the available assets shows that the depositors will probably receive seventeen shillings and sixpence in the pound, and in the meantime the liquidators will undertake the management of the Company’s business in the Mauritius. Washington, May 6. Congress rejected the Tariff Bill, in which provision was made for redaction to the extent of 20 per cent, of the customs duties on numerous articles, including wool and woollen goods.
