CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS

At the Addington Yards on Wednesday (says the Press), heavy entries of all kinds of stock came to hand. Attendance of buyers a moderate one. The entry of fat sheep consisted in a great part of fat ewes, and these were sold at even a decline on last quo led values, the being a most listless one. The few lines of crossbred wethers were chiefly obtained by buyers for export, but at a cheaper rate than has lately been paid for this class of sheep. Sales were as follows —Crossbred wethers from 15s 6d to 18s 6d, ewes from 12s to 15s 6d, merino wethers from 9s to lls 3d, being from 2d to 2£d, according to quality. In the store sheep market a large number of sheep were sent forward. Demand was very dull, sales difficult to make. A heavy entry of pigs found purchasers at rates quite equal to last quotations —Porkers from 25s to 42* 6d, baconers from 45s to 63*. The entry of fat cattle was about an average one. The sale began very late in the day, and buyers supplied privately. Sales at auction were made to a dull demand at from 17« to 18s 6d per 1001 b. In the store cattle market a large entry met a dragging sale. Messrs Robert Wilkin and Co. report : Sheepskins, Pat, Tallow, Hides, etc.— At the New Zealand Wool Stores on Thursday the quantity catalogued for the day’s sale was 2258 sheepskins, 73 packages rough fut and tallow. The trade was well represented by local buyers, and biddings came with animation, resulting in a clearance of everything. Rough fat and tallow had an upward tendency, realising to 2£d per lb for the former and up to 28s per“cwt for tallow. A nice line of about 500 crossbreds from the Frozen Meat Company fetched from 3s to 3s sd, after keen competition between the fell mongers assembled. Butchers’ and country crossbreds and merinos ail had a rising tendency at prices highly satisfactory, which are as under : —Merinos, from Is to 5s Id fur full woolled; do, butchers’, Is lid to 2s lOd ; crossbreds, 9d to 4s 6d; do, butchers’, 2s 5d to 3a 61 ; lambskins, Is to Is lOd ; country ikins, 6d to 3s 6 1 ; pelts, 2d to Is 3d. Rough tat, 2d to 2£d per lb ; tallow, in bags and tins, 2|d to 2|d per lb ; do, in casks, 22s to 28s per cwt. Hides and calfskins, unsold. CHRISTCHURCH CORA EXCHANCE. The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 9th bust ; The business done in grain and produce lias shown no marked a'teration during the past week, there being a continuance of the depression existing in the previous week. Buyers still decline to operate, to ’ any large extent, and are merely trying

to keep things moving in hope of a turn for tbe better. There is still a largo proportion of wheat coining to hand cold and dump. This has given an impetus to those possessed of inventive genius to exercise their abilities in the direction of drying without deteriorating the value to any great extent, and, in at least one instance, there is the promise of a fair amount of success. It is to be hoped that the means used will not prove disappointing, as it will be greatly to the advantage of the farmer if the experiment should prove successful. Values for tire week are as follows : Wheat—Sound and dry Tuscan, 3s 5d ; Pearl, (,3a 4d ; Hunters, 3s 3d f.0.b., with very little disposition on tbe part of buyers to purchase. Oats. —Bright short feed continues in active demand at 2s 2d (o 2s 3d, and first-class milling might command 2s 4d f. o.b. Barley—Nothing but prime malting saleable at 3s 9d to 4s, Christchurch. Pens.—Prussian Blue in good request at Bs 6d to 3s 9d ; grey, 3s to 3s 3d f.o.b. Beans—3s to 3s 3d, Christchurch. Potatoes—The outlet being at present very limited it is difficult to quote with any precision, nominally 30s at country stations. Butter and Cheese—9d to lOd for the former, with very little inquiry ; the latter 4d to fid f.o.b. ENGLISH MARKETS. Lowdow, May 6. Wool—At to-day’s auction 12,700 bales were offered. The market continues steady, but the demand is not active. May 8. The breadstuff's market is unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex store, is worth 425, and New 'Zealand ditto, 3fis to 425, according to quality. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, remains at 28s, Australian tallow, average quality— Beef, 36s ; mutton, 395. The catalogue at to-day’s wool sale comprised 10,900 bales. A firm and active demand was experienced.
