THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
London, April 24. In the House of Commons to-night the Premier made a statement regarding the situation of affairs in the Soudan. The country and Government, Mr Gladstone said, recognised that they were under an obligation to secure the future safety of General Gordon, and Ministers were fully prepared to fulfil that obligation should occasion require it. The Cabinet had a long moating yesterday on the Egyptian question' It extended over four hours. General Lord Wolseley was present. A special meeting of the Egyptian Cabinet has been held to take into consideration the position ot affairs. The meeting was attended by the Khedive, Reas Pasha, tnd Cherif Pasha, and approved of tha proposal for the immediate relief of Berber, April 25. It is believed that the garrisons at Berber and Dongala will shortly have to arrange terms of capitulation with the rebels, A British expedition will relieve Gordon Pasha at Khartoum in the autumn, April 26. The Government have had under consideration a joint recommendation by Sir R. G. Egerton, British ConsulGeneral at Cairo, JNubar Pasha, President of the Egyptian Council of Ministers, and Sir Evdyn Wood, commanding the Egyptian army, that a combined force of British and Egyptian troops should be despatched to the relief of Berber, In reply, the Government has stated that the recommendation cannot be acted upon at the present, time, and that such expedition cannot be sent into the Soudan for four mouths from present date. April 27. The latest information from Cairo states that it is believed that Zebehr Pasha, who was appointed by Gordon Pasha as assistant Governor of the Soudan, is intriguing with the followers of El Mahdi. It is now impossible to either telegraph or write to Khartoum, Tne position of Berber is daily becoming worse, and the place is seriously menaced by the rebels in the 'neighborhood of Korosko.
