COLONIAL MARKETS.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report on the Pmc iice Markets <d New Zealand, 24th April. 1884, as follows - Wool. AYo ar g now in possession of priced catalogues of tnc C/olov.ml sales in London to the evening of the 2r ih Fehnjary. After much irregularity in prices, the market had by that, date settled down to an even scale of rates. Faulty wools of all descriptions, inferior to medium merinos, coarse crossbreds, and lambs, all displayed a decline on December rates, varying from Ad to IA-d per In. line combing merinos and' high-conditioned half and three-quarter-breds were, however, well competed for up to the level of previous values. For the next series, commencing 7th May, 270,000 bales have arrived up to date of latest cablegrams. Sheepskins. Dunedin. —-At our last sale biddings were very spirited, green crossbreds brought up to 2s 7d, and merinos 2s 2d. Cliristchurch.—Green crossbreds made from Is 8d to-2s lOd ; merinos, Is 9d to 2s Gd ; country skins, up to 4s Gi for crossbreds and 5s Gd tor merinos. Tallow and Fat. Dunedin. —Butchers rouge rat ranges from 17s Gd to 23s Gd, and at the freezing works, 25s per cwt. Christchurch. -Very little tallow is now offering. Private sales Mve come under our notice at up to o2s uu for prime mutton. Inferior to numium realises at auction IDs to 28s. Rough fat meets with good competition at 2,1 to 2tjd per lb., according to quality and condition. Hiulo. Dunedin. —The market continues s'oady at late rates ; .ill sorts are easily placed, heavy hides being m >3t m demand. Christchurch. - There is m good m-mand for heavy hides, but the supply is very limited. ’Quotations stand as hist reported, viz., 31 to 41, according to weight," sated and well trimmed, Chain, Dunedin. —Wheat —There is a tabdemand on the part ot our local millers for choice miilin.tr parcels of small dimensions for immediate delivery, at from 3s 9d to 3s lid, but for any out of condition (hero is no runrKCt at present. Wo do not anticipate any .-hipping demand until threshing becomes more general. Oats—Bright stent milling are ■worth 2s 2d to 2s 3d ; br'ght stout !eed, 2a to 2s Id, bags included. Barley— Malsters are now showing more de-dre to purchase, good samples are being shown, and a few sales have resulted at from os 9d to 4s 3d, delivered Cliristchurch. On the whole the weather has been favorable for completing the ingathering of crops, and for proceeding with threshing operations, hut n.iforInnately the mischief .occasioned by the rains of the previous month is proving to be more serious than was contemplated at date of last report. Mb.eat which was gathered in good condition has suffered injury whilst in slack, and much that would improve in stack is being hurriedly thresh.id out, regardless of present condition. Merchants arc indisposed to purchase under these conditions, and a large uortion of the wliear, sent down for shipment on growers’ account is refused at the ship’s side, causing serious loss and inconvenience. In "seasons like the present we cannot top strongly impress upon producers the importance of careful thatching, and delayjbr.i’Breshing, in order to give the grain j-iiine for sweating. MR) eat —The marke. continues quite listless, and none but prime milling in sound shipping condition meets with any attention : for such sales are readily effected at 3s 3d for winter wheat, and 3s yd to 3s Gd for long berried sorts, f.o.h. Damp and inferior grain is most difficult of sale at Lorn 2s 3d to 2s 9d, ex store, Cliristchurch. tihipments are on an increasing scale, but the} 7 are considerably less than during the same month for many years past. Freights, by steamer, 37s Gd and 10 per cent ; and by sailer, 37s 9d and 5 per cent, compare favorably with the rates current in Australia. Oats —The quality of the crop is fairly good, and buyers have no diflicul'y in supplying their reouirements of milling and stout feed qualities. For the former 2s 2d to 2s 3d, and for the latter 2s to 2s Id f.o.b. are current quotations. Barley—Finest malting is saleable at, 3s 10.1 to 4s 2d ; medium, 3s Gd to os 9.1 ; indifferent, 3s 2d to 3s 5d ; feed, 2s Gd to 2s 9d. Timaru. —AYlieat —The weather for the past t p n days lias been favorable for threshing, so that grain is coming lo hand freely. Prime choice samples are difficult to obtain, while medium to good are in plentiful supply. In face of the low prices ruling in the Home markets, buyers are only operating for immediate requirements ; and as farmers do not care to risk shipping on their own account a good deal of the wheat is lavng stored. AYe quote good prime at 3s io "... : medium to prime, 2s 9d to 3s ; inferior and fowls’ wheat, D 9d to 2s Pd on trucks in Tinian, ‘ • market continues firm, and ..rl bright pmmp oats are in demand. Thu quality of the crop is excellent. Our quotations are, bright miling, Is lOd to 2s Id ; feeding sorts, Is 9d to Is lid ex store. Barley— No large transactors have come under our notice in this cereal. AVe have placed fair medium at 3s 3 1 to 3s 9,1 ex store.
