THE ORARI DEFERRED PAYMENT SETTLERS.

At Thursday’s meeting of the Land Board the undermentioned purchasers of deferred payment sections were called upon to show cause why they had not complied with the conditions of the Land Act. The members of the Board present were Messr* Kitson (Chairman), G. L. Lee and D. McMillan.

William Glanville purchased section 198, block 349, lot 36, village settlement Orari, No. 2. The area of the land was 9a.

Mr Postlethwaite appeared for the selector, and stated that he had not built owing to the nature of the country. The river broke over the country. Consequently be could not comply with the conditions.

Glanville stated that he was not exactly prepared to live on the land, as his work was some distance from it. He was prepared to live occasionally on the land, and would take steps to reside on the land, He lived at Woodbury. John Logan purchased section 351, block 349, lot 53, 7a 2r. village settlement, Orari, No. 2. He resided with his son on lot 43. He was prepared to build and reside on the land if the Board would give him time.

S. Newport purchased section 351, block 1850. lot 32, sa, village settlement, Orari, No. 2. He had no house. The land was partially cultivated and fenced. He lived at Geraldine. Hecry Newport, his father, had the adjoining section. He thought the house erected by his father was sufficient. He was prepared to build rather than lose his section.

William Foley purchased section 251, block 1650, lot 35, sa, T.S., Orari, No 2. He stated that he lived at Geraldine, and had a small house on the section. When he purchased the section he intended to live on it himself, but from certain family arrangements he found that he could not do so. He wished to put his son on the land as his representative. He was prepared to live on the land occasionally. Edward Grimsey purchased section 325, block 1650, lot 42,5 a 2r, V.S., Orari, No 2. He lived at Geraldine, but was prepared to fulfil the conditions.

Watson Nilly purchased section 324, block 1650. lot 44, 7a 2r, Y.S., Orari, No 2. He was prepared to build and reside on the land.

R. Marshall purchased section 222, block 1650, lot 46, 7a Ir 20p. He had no house on the land. He had with J. Priddles laid it down in English grass. He was prepared to build and reside upon the land. He had paid up his instalments.

John Pearce purchased section 330, block 1650, lot 46, 7a Ir 20p. He had a house upon the land, but did not constantly reside there- A John Brenton lived with him in the honsa. It was his (Pearce’s) house and his home. He had not let it to Brenton. but he wished to transfer it to Brenton.

Robert Hatfield purchased section 210, block 1650, lot 53, 8a 3r. The land was occupied by F. Brown, who cultivated it for Hatfield, who lived in Temuka. He was forced to go where he could get work. He was prepared to build and reside on the laud. He had no borne at present. John Vance purchased section 214, block 1650. lot 54, 6a 3r 24p, V.S., Orari, No. 2. When he was out of work he lived on the lot. He had a house built of wood with galvanised iron roof, and no chimney. He cooked his food outside.

D, McAllister purchased section 217, block IBS'), lot 65, 12a 2r 26p. He had a cottage on the land, which was occupied by Grinsley. When he built the house he lived in it about six months. His wife and family would not stay there on account of the river. He was in arrears with his instalments. Ha thought lie could transfer his land to a person if the Board would permit him to do so. The section was ms good to him. He could not got work. J. Brown purchased section 215, block 1650, lot GO, 16a 12r 23p, Y.S., Orari, No. 2. Ho was not residing on the land. The reason was that the land was too wet. He was prepared to pay up hi* intalments, and transfer the section to some one who had dry land. Would the Board allow him to transfer it to hi* brother. It was quite impossible to live on tiie lot. The stacks last year were under water. Geo. Davis purchased section 33, block 8, lot 7,6 a 2r 2p, subdivision lot 14, reserve 350. He had not resided on the land, but had kept it in cultivation since he purchased it. Ha had paid his instalments „ gularly. He would build on it if he could afford it. He had had very little work. He was a bricklayer by trade, and had a small family. He wou'd reside or let rather than lose it. He would be prepared to build within three months.

Samuel Hardley purchased section 29, block 7, lot 9, sa, sub division lot 141 aad 350. Mr Marshman had told him that it was only necessary for one person to live on the land, 9, 10, and 11. His sons resided with him on the land. They were tenants in common. He farmed theland, and lived at Ashburton, lie wished to complete the purchase. W. J. Hardley, purchaser of ana of the sections of the above three, gave similar evidence.

J. P. F. Newman purchased section 4, lot 11, reserve 350, Ho lived at Ashburton. He had given up driving a cab, and intended now to reside on the land. There had been a house on the land for about two years. He was now prepared to reside on the land.

J, G. Palmer purchased section 354, block 349, lot 41, sa, Ha did not reside on the land, and had lately been living with his father. Ho intended to build and reside cn the land at once. His father was an invalid, and lie was obliged to contribute towards his father’s support. He would build and reside on the land. The Board deferred its decisions for three months.—Pres?
