Our Fourth Page,—A quantity of read* ing matter will be found oa our fourth page. Native College.— A large Satire college is to be built in Gisborne at a cost of £I4OO. A Paying Industry. The Mosgiel Woollen Company has declared aa interim diridend at the rate of 10 per cent. The Member toe Geraldine. —Mr W. Postlethwaite, M.H.R. for Geraldine, will address his constituents in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Friday evening next. Annual Gathering.—The annual gathering of the members of the Presbyterian Church, Geraldine, will take place in the Odd* fellows’ Hall on24th May (Queen’s Birthday). ' Important Clearing Sale.— Mr K. F, Gray will hold an important clearing sale of lire and dead stock, implements, etc., on the farm of Mr T. Park, Milford, on Monday next. The Requisition to Me Tripp. —ln another column will be found the requisition to Mr Tripp requesting him to stand for the constituency of Geraldine at the ensuing general election, and bis reply thereto. Prolific Yield.—During the threshing season one often hears instances of prolific yields, and we haye been informed thatjon the farm of Mr J. Airey, at Rangitata, twenty acres sown in ‘ Danish oats resulted in the astonishing yield of 1700 bushels, or 85 bushels to the acre. Maslin and Sheeratt’s Weekly Salis. —We have been requested to state that in future Messrs Maslin and Sherratt will hold their weekly auction sales in Temuka erery Thursday, instead of on Saturday as hitherto. In consequence of this alteration no sale will be held at their rooms to-day. Temuka Blue Ribbon Army.—The monthly meeting of the Blue Ribbon Army will be held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Tuesday evening next, the speaker being Mr M. W. Green, M.H.R., of Dunedin. The chair will be taken by the Rev. T. A. Hamilton. Parishioners’ Meeting. The annual meeting of parishioners in the Temuka parochial district takes place on Monday evening next at half-past 7 o’clock. The annual balance sheet will be presented, and officers for the ensuing year appointed. A good attendance is requested. Another Explosion. The Owake powder mill exploded again last Thursday evening at 5 o’clock the mill-keeper getting rather severely burned. He had just lifted the worked charge, and put a green on* oa the mill, and was in the act of taking the *i worked charge away when the new one exploded, which also exploded that being removed. The mill has only been working three weeks since effecting the repairs caused by the last accident. Temuka Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.—A Committee meeting of this Society was held on Thursday evening last, when it was decided to give an entertainment in about six weeks, consisting of the popular operetta “ Box and Cox,” and a farce entitled “ The Smoked Miser.” Judging from the caste of the respective characters, a good performance may be anticipated. It was suggested that this entertainment should be given in aid of the Temuka Mechanics Institute,
Majob Ropata. —With referenca to the reduction of salary paid to Major Ropata, it is -stated that it has only been made in the Militia and Land Purchase services, which at present are not performed by the Major. As Native Assessor he was in receipt of a salary of £SO per annum, and this has been increased to £IOO, placing him on the same footing as the principal Assessors. Major Ropata has written to Government declining to receive the reduced pension of £IOO a year. Signs op the Times. The following characteristic advertisement appears in a recent issue of the Press : —“ To the electors of the Avon district. The members of the Government have behaved so badly, parti cularly to Canterbury in regard to the railway tariff, that I am induced to offer my services to the Electors of the Avon District in the General Assembly. If a better man shows up, I will gladly resign in his favour ; if not my propaganda will appear, bye-and-bye, in other pages of this journal. I shall not incur one shilling expens* in my election. But I will gratuitously educate people who do not understand the franchise. —T. C. Mode* HOUSE.” _
South Obabi School Committee.— This Committee held their ordinary meeting on April 21. Present—Messrs R. A. Barker (Chairman), Gregg, Bissett, Bmsfcin, Stewart, and Bates. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Board of Education, staling that six copies of the Act had been sent for. The Chairman stated that he had granted Mr Eraser three days’ leave at Easter, and paid a number of small accounts, as per list produced. The action of the Chairman was approved of. The teacher reported the average attendance for the last three weeks to be ; Boys, 20; girls 24.4. Total, 45. The visitor reported satisfactorily- on the conduct of the school, and recommended certain repairs and improvements. Resolved that they stand over for the present, and that Mr Binskin act as visitor for next month. Mr Stewart applied on behalf of the Gospel Temperance Committee for permission to use the schoolroom for one night. Resolved —‘That the room be granted freed Henry Cole, being continually absent from school, it was resolved — ‘That the Chairman take the usual steps for enforcing his attendance.’ The meeting adjourned to the third Monday in May. Gray will hold his monthly auction sales at Temuka on Wednesday next. Particulars of the entries for Messrs Mundell and Co.’s monthly sale will be found elsewhere. Tenders close on Monday next for a five years’ lease of the Geraldine racecourse for grazing purposes. Mr A. Metcalf, Orari Plat, announces that he has lost a nearly new breeching, between the back road, Orari Elat, and Bobbie’s Messrs Mundell and Co. will shortly hold a sale by auction of freehold property, live and dead stock, &c., at Mr J. Harrison’* farm, near Geraldine. Messrs Miles and Co., Christchurch, under instructions from W. U. Slack, Esq., will sell at the Winchester saleyards on Friday, 9th May, a large quantity of live and dead stock.
