THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Cairo, April 17. Intelligence has been received from Khartoum that General Gordon decided to appoint Zebehr Pasha to the position of Assistant-Governor of the Soudan, but Zebehr Pasha has declined to accept the post. April 18. Despatches to hand from Geneial Gordcn at Khartoum, dated 9th instant, announce that a prominent merchant at El Obeid reports to him that the followers of El Mahdi have been recently twice defeated by a force of local Arabs, and that the rebels are now surrounded. Lokdoit, April 19. It has transpired that Major Sir Evelyn Baring, Consul-General at Cairo, has been summoned to London by the first mail, It is understood that the Government have now under consideration important questions relating to tbs state of affairs in Egypt. April 20. It ia understood that the Egyptian army will not be touched by the British proposals, which indicate a limited protectorate, Osman Digna has rallied 2000 men, and now threatens Souakira when the British retire. It is reported that 300 refugees from Shendy hare been driven on to a aaud bank in the Nile and massacred. General Gordon will probably order Stewart and Power to escape across the equator. Bombay, April 21. The police in this city and other town* in India have effected the seizure of large quantities of printed proclamations signed by the Mahdi, urging the Mussulmen to join his ranks.
