ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.
The Auckland City authorities have instituted proceedings under the Public Health Act against a person who sent the clothing of a typhoid fever victim to an auction room for sale.
In the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on Friday, Ann Roil was charged with murdering her children, William Robert, and Emily Roil, on March 13th. The charge in connection with William Robert Roil was taken first. No fresh evidence was adduced. The jury by direction of the Judge, returned a verdict of not guilty, on the ground of insanity. She was ordered to be confined in the Sunnyside Asylum till the pleasure of the Colonial Secretary is known. In the other case the Crown Prosecutor entered a nolle prosequi. Charles Parker, charged with bigamy, was acquitted.
A serious coach accident occurred on Sandon read, Fielding, last Saturday night, A “ brake ” containing the Fielding Amateur Dramatic Company of twelve persons, including two ladies and a young child, was proceeding to Sandon to give a performance, when the vehicle was capsized. Both ladies were serioiu ly injured : one man had his leg broken, and all the others were more or less injured. On Sunday Mr H. Bennetts found the body of a man in Hagley Park, near Addington, and gave information to the police. Detective O’Connor proceeded to the spot, and found the body lying on its back, quite dead, with a wound in the forehead evidently caused by a bullet. A revolver was found close by the side of the b»dy, and in the pocket a letter was found detailing the circumstances under which the suicide was committed. The name of the deceased is John Rosewell, though he has been going under the name of John Cross, and lie arrived here by the lonic.
