THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Cairo, April 9. Despatches now to hand from General Gordon, dated 3ftth March, state that the rebels in the neighborhood of Khartoum number under two thousand. Desultory fighting has taken place between them and the Egyptian troops in the garrison at Khartoum. The, latter has been victorious in all the encounters, and many of the rebels hare been killed. General Gordon further reports that 200 Bas'ni Bazouks (Egyptian Irregulars) having proved mutinuous, were at onca disarmed without disturbance. April 10. The difficulty which had arisen between Nubar Pasha, President of tha Council of Ministers an 1 Mr Clifford Lloyd, Under-Secretary i< r the Home Department, has been amicably arranged. Nubar Pasha has vithdrawn his resignation, and both will remain ia office. Intelligence has been received here that Admiral Sir W. Hewitt, cornruanding the East Indian Squadron, who proceeded a short time back on a special mission to Abyssinia has • now left Massowah on board his flagship H.M.S. Euryalus, and is returning to Souakim, Further news to hand from Kassala, a town in Soudan near ihe Abyssinian frontier, confirms previous intelligence of the actual position of the beleaguered garrison. The Governor made a fresh appeal to the British autlioritibS at Bnu«kim for aid. He announc-s that the Baslii Bazouks forming part <■< his force ar<3 deserting him, and Ue fears he any not be able to hold out much longer unless assistance is sent. April 11. News from the Soudan states that the town of Shendy has been besieged by the rebel?. April 12. Telegrams to hand to-day irom Souakim report the arrival th.re of a battalion of Egyptian troops, to form part of a garrison at that port. London, April 8.
