TELEGRAMS.
ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 1. Telegrams from Cannes announce that the Prince of Wales has started for England with the body of the late Duke ot Albany. It has transpired that 11.R.H. the Duke of Albany was willing to have accepted the Governorship of Victoria, but that Her Majesty forbade him doing so. Sir Henry Loch will probably sail for Melbourne in June, April 2. The Committee of the French Senate recommend, with regard to the Recidiviste Bill, that the place to which prisoners may be deported should not be mentioned, and should be left to the Government for the time being. At the Liverpool Meeting, the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, of 1000 guineas, was won by Voluptuary, Frigate second, and Roquefort third. Edmund Yates *has been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for libelling the Earl of Lonsdale in an article which appeared in the columns of the World. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received the following telegram : Aorangi, s.s., sailed from Plymouth at 7 p.m,, 29th March. Fenstanton, s.s., arrived, all well, at Monte Video. Refrigerator working well, but passage has been lengthened owing to the heavy weather. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, April 3. All the British men-of-war in port will fire thirty guns on Saturday next, and Monday will be observed as a day of general mourning for the death of Prince Leopold.
