GERALDINE PUBLIC SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday evening last, the 26th inst. Members present —Messrs Pearpoint (Chairman), Cunningham, parrel], C, E. Sherratt, A. Sherratt, Dunlop and G. Ward. MINUTES, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and passed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence received was read : From the Board of Education intimating the recommendation cf the Committee to appoint Miss M. Maclean and Master Kallagher, as pupil teachers in the place of Mr Bethune resigned, was eanctioned by the Board. The Chairman stated that he had bad a conversation with Mr Hughes, the head master of the school in regard to the choosing of the pupil teachers, and he had advised that one of the teachers of another school should hold an examination, and the two who gained the highest number of marks should be recommended to the Board for appointment. Mr Westropp was accordingly asked to hold tie examination, which resulted in Miss Maclean and Master Kallfigher gaining the highest number of marks. The report of Mr Westropp, in which Ptrstated the same as above,and enclosing the number of marks attained by each, was laid on the table. From Miss Freeman, resigning her position as pupil teacher in the school, and giving one month's notice from March 30th was received. The Chairman stated that the dating of the resignation was contrary to what he had requested in his letter to Miss Freeman. He had asked her to send in her resignation so as for her time t • expire at the present meeting. He wrote to her immediately after the last meeting of the Committee.

On the motion of Mr C. E. Sherratt, and seconded by Mr Farrell, Miss Free man's resignation was accepted. Proposed by Mr A. Sherratt, seconded < by Mr Farrell and carried Master Smith be recommended to the Board of Education as pupil teacher in place of Miss Freeman resigned." The Secretary was requested to notify the resignation to the Board ot Educatian and to ask that Master Smith be appointed in Miss Freeman's place. MISCELLANEOUS. The Chairman said, in accordance with the Inspector of rjcbools' report, which would come before the meeting later on, he had written to the Board for some new maps. These had been received and to his astonishment he had received an account for £8 Is for them. He wrote to the Secretary of the Board and told him if they were charged for he should return them. To this be had received a reply to the effect that the account was gent by mistake; The Chairman also remarked that he had invited tenders for roofing the verandah, but had onlj received one tender,

: that of Mr D. Clouston, for £B 9s, but if the shingles were removed, £3 10s, It was resolved—" That Mr Clouston's tender for £3 tOs be accepted, the work to be passed by Messrs A. Sherratt and Farrell." It was decided to ask the Board of Education not to take any further steps at present in regard to the filling up of the position of third teacher in the school, and to acknowledge receipt of a desk, form 3 and maps. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The following report of the Inspector of Schools made on an examination held on February 13th 1884, was road . " The ordinary half-yearly inspection of the Geraldine School wat held on February 13th, 1884. The attendance is steadily increasing and the school is doing good work. The general instruction is advanced and calr.:V ' 1 to develop the intelligence of fh« scholars. The discipline is mild, but encouraging and effective. The infant department is creditably conducted and is doing useful work. The school maps have been in use for many years and most of them are quite worn out. Six new ones are required in addition to a map of the World for the elementary geography lessons in the Infant Department. One additional desk and form is also wanted to accommodate the first class in the infant room. " Henry W. Hammond. " Inspector. " Education Office, Timaru, " March 4th, 1884." HEAD MASTER'S REPORT.

The rep»rt of the Head Master for the past month was read, giving the average attendance of boys as 101.17, girls, 71.27, making an average total of 172.44. He requested that a batten might be placed on one of the walls tor the purpose of hanging the maps on. Resolved —" That the batton be obtained and that Mr Clouston, whilst re-roofing the verandah, be requested to attach the same to the wall," VISITING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Messrs Cunningham and Dunlop, visitors for the past montb,reported that on the day they went over the school there were IS9 pupils present, and the school was making good progress, everything going on very satisfactorily. They recommended that more shingle be obtained to be placed near the outer school doors, and the large stones broken. Resolved—" That the larger stones be broken and fine shingle obtained. The same to be left to the supervision of Messrs Farrell and A. Sherratt." ACCOUNTS. Two accounts were passed for payment. VISITORS FOR THE MONTH. Messrs Farrell and A.
