THE PROPOSED UNION OF THE TOWNSHIPS OF WALLINGFORD AND AROWHENUA.

Mr WV R. Uprichard, who recently, on behalf of a committee appointed at a public meeting of the residents of Arowhenua, forwarded to the Colonial Secretary a petition signed by the householders of Arowhenua praying that the townships of Wallingford and Arowhenua might be incorporated a Town District under the name of Temuka, instead of Wallingford being a separate Town District, has received the following reply, which he has placed at our disposal : “ Colonial Secretary’s Office, “Wellington, N.Z„ “ 21st March, 1884.

“ Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, 13 th iust., of the number and date quoted on the margin, enclosing a peu..„.i praying His Excellency to iu-..ude the Arowhenua Township with Wallingford, and declare them together a Town District under the name of Temuka.

“ In reply I am directed to inform you that before effect can be given to this request a petition must be presented signed by two-thirds of the resident householders in both districts taken together, and it must at the same time be known that the two districts together do not exceed the statutory area.—l have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient servant,
