TIMARU AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The annual meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday afternoon. Twentythree members were present, and the President, Mr A. W. Wright, occupied the chair. The Secretary, Mr P. W. Stubbs, was also present. The minutes of the last annual meeting having been confirmed, the Chairman read the report of the Committee of Management for 1883-84. The report stated that the Committee, in order to bring the expenditure within the income, reduced the prizes previously offered by 50 per cent, resolved to give no special prizes as formerly, and in many cases raise considerably the entrance fees. This plan, along with the most depressed state of the times, had the effect of reducing the show to, what as a show it was, a complete failure. At the same time they improved their financial position by a little over £4O on the year’s operations. As to whether the Association should continue the same restricted policy in future they offered no opinion. The annual horse parade resulted in a araall loss. The Committee recommended that a trial of reapers and binders should be held annually, when prizes should be given and entrance fees charged, ' The balance sheet showed a total income of'£633 os lid, and an expenditure of £591 14s lid, including £172 4s 6d for prizes. The overdraft is now £431. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Mr R. H. Rhodes was elected President and Mr D, McLaren Vice-President of the Association. The following were elected a Committee of Management for the year, viz:—Messrs W. F. Aplin, W. Balfour, R. A. Barker, A. Cox, J. Campbell, W. W. Cartwright, E. El worthy, H. Ford, A. Grant, J. W. Hardie, P. Hamlyn, W. Moody, D. Maclean, R. Macbay, J. C. McKerrow, D. McLaren, 0. Orbell, A. C. Pringle, B. R. Pitt, W. S. Raine, J, S. Rutherford, W. Stevenson, T. Teschemaker, J, Talbot, and A. W. Wright. Mr F. W. Stubbs was re-elected Secretary and Air R, Stewart, Treasurer. On the motion of Mr McLaren it was resolved—‘‘That in consideration of Messrs Maclean and Stewart’s extreme liberality in providing office accommodation free of charge for the past year, Mr D. Maclean be made a life member of the Association.” It was resolved —“ That a Committee be appointed to canvass the country between the Rangitata and Waitaki, with a view of raising a fund for prizes for the Show of 1884, to be given as the Managing Committee may direct.” In addition to this canvass last year’s Committee resolved some time ago to make a subscription among themselves to provide a special cup of £IOO if possible. The list already shows about £6O. A subscription list for the general prize fund was opened in the room, and a few names placed upon it.
