ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS.

Judge—Mr Lawson ; Startar—Mr Coltman ; Ground Stewards—Messrs Cook, Pearpoint, Bowden, Farrell, M. Connelly, Sims, Mundell, J. W.Pye ; Handieappere —Messrs Ooltman and Pye ; Secretary Mr A. Fisher.

The weather daring the early part of yesterday morning was anything but promising for holding the sports in the Domain, Geraldine, a dense mass of clouds hanging like a pall over the earth. As a general license booth would not have been permitted, on the ground that it was too near to the two licensed houses (the Crown and Geraldine Hotels), a refreshment bootb, for the sale of pastry and temperance drinks, was granted by the Committee to Mr Somerville. The arrangements for all the events were very complete. The banks in Geraldine were closed throughout the day, being a statute holiday, and the stores closed at noon. The events did not come off till 1 p.m. owing to the threatening state of the weather, but it cleared up about noon, and remained fine afterwards. The following are the results : 100 Yards Handicap Race First prize, £110s; second prize, £l. Entrance 2s fid. G. Rae (syds) 1 E. S. Smith (scratch) 2 J. Heney ... 3 After a good start Rae got the lead, and kept it to the tape. Smith, from the scratch, passing his antagonist, made a good second. 440 Yards Handicap Hurdle Race (over eight flights of hurdles) —First prize, £2 ; second prize, £1; third prize, 10s. Entrance 3s fid. E. S. Smith (scratch) 1 J. Heney (15yds) 2 A. O’Neill (25yds) ... 3 Heney overtook O’Neill at the fourth hurdle. O’Neill when he passed over it fell, and was quickly beaded by Smith, who then passed Heney. and won easily. Rae did not put in an appearance. Running Long Jump—First prize, £1 5s ; second prize, 15s. Entrance 2s fid. G, Bae (18ft lOin) 1 J. Cummings ... ... (18ft4in) 2 This event saused considerable excitement, but the contest ultimately laid between Cummings and Rae and was won by the lattei. 250 Yards Handicap Race —First prize, £1 10s ; second prize, 15s. Entrance 2s fid. E. S. Smith (scratch) ... ... ... 1 G, Rae (11yds) 2 J. Sullivan (9yds) 3 This was an easy victory for Smith, who passed the others soon after the start was made, Rae coming in second and Sullivan third, Heney and O’Neill had entered but did not compete. Running High Jump First prize, £1 10s ; second prize, £l. Entrance 2s fid. G. Rae (oft) 1 J. Heney (4ft 10in) 2 There were four entries for this event, but the final struggle lay between Baa and Heney, the former ultimately proving himself the better man. Vaulting with Pole First prize, £1 ss; second prize, 15s. Entrance 2s fid. G. Rae (Bft) 1 W. Hobbs (7ft 6in) 2 Four entered,'but Heney and Quaid had to retire at 7ft 4in. Half Mile Handicap— First prize, £2 ; second prize, £1 ; third prize, 10s, Entrance 3s fid. J. Sullivan (45yds) ... ... 1 J, Heney (20yds) 2 —Hobbs (20yds) ... 3 A good start was effected, and they all spun along in the order of their handicaps. McGillicuddy fell out soon after going the

second round, Sullivan headed the others with a good spurt soon after the start and kept the lead to the finish.

Kennedy (35yds), J. Sullivan (25yds) and W. Cunningham (16yds), also running. Heney proved too much for his fellow contestants and won as above,
