THE MASSACRE AT SINKAT.
A correspondent at Souakim telegraphed on February 13th :—At last the heroic garrison at Sinkat has been butchered, For a fortnight they had been eating roots and tree leaves, It was a feeble hand indeed which made the sortie, to die among tfie rebel hordes. Tewfik Bey harrangued his men, saying that by fighting they might save themselves, but by remaining they must die from hunger in a few days, as flight was impossible. The men thus animated with Tewfik Bey’s spirit, destroyed the military stores, exploded the magazines, filled their pouches to the utmost with cartridges, and issued forth, 600 strong, against the rebels, Osman Ijigna’s horde rushed to attack Tewfik Bey, and the men fought nobly for a long time. They repulsed every effort to break thpir ranl;a, but finally superior numbers prevailed, and with q rush the rebels burst through one of the sides of the Egyptian’s square, A general massacre ensued, and not a'soul escaped, According to latest reports only four sick who were fo take part in the sortie were spared, Before the Sortie a rebel sheik approached Sipkat and summoned Tewfik Bey fo surrender, saying his life would be snared. The garrison aqsweyecj defiantly, reviling the rebsls. During the sortie the women and children followed in rear of tho soldiers. A large number of rebels were killed.
