ACTION AGAINST THE N. Z. SHIPPING CO.
An application was made before the President of the Probate and Divorce Division of the High Court of Justice, on Dec. 17th, to presume the death of the Misses Alice and Mary Ann Haylor, under the following circumstances. They left Grave-end on June 19th last, bound for New Zealand, in the Waitara, belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company. They were accompanied by their father and a number of friends. On June 22nd following, in the Channel, the vessel came in collision with the Hurunui, belonging to C.ie same company, the Waitara sinking with great loss of life, among the number drowned being the Misses Haylor. Mr LeeRoberls, who appeared for the father, in applying for letters of administration of his daughters, said that accounts of the disaster had appeared in the contemporary newspapers, and a Board of Trade inquiry had been held on July 17th, when the court found that the collision was due to the negligence of the officers in charge of the ship Waitara. The father was anxious to enforce what claims he had against the New Zealand Shipping Company. His Lordship granted the application.—European Mail.
