SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
GERALDINE, On Wednesday evening last the usual meeting of the Committee was held. Members present—Messrs Pearpoint (Chairman), Cunningham, A. Farrell, G. Ward, N. Dunlop, and C. E. Sherrslt. chaikman’s statement. The Chairman remarked that since the last meeting of the Committee tiie Manager of the Bank of Newssea!ani had been notified ns to the names of the newly elected Committee, and also those who had been appointed to sign cheques. The Board of Education had also been notified as to the election of Committee and the name of, the Chairman ; also in regard to the nomination of Messrs fete ward and A. Sherratt rs members of the Board ; and that Mr Bethune had resigned his position as assistant teacher in the echeol. Since last meeting a letter had been received from Mr W. J. Steward, intimating bis acceptance of his nomination by the Committee at a candidate for membership of the Board of Education. He had seen the Rev. G, Barclay, the . Chairman of the Board of Education, in regard to the site for the new school, and it appeared that the Board had taken the matter up and have asked the Government to permanently gazette the site lor a sphool, CORKESEONDENCB. The following correspondence received was read : Circular from the Chairman of the Waimate School Committee re the nomination of Messrs Steward, R. A.
Barker and G. G. Russell as members of the Board and asking the Committee’s support of tbo.'o candidates. From the Chairman of the Temuka School Committee re same. From the Rev. D. Gordon, stating that lie had been nominated as a candidate for membership and asking for the Committee’s support. From the Board of Education, asking that an enclosed form might be filled up by the head teacher, showing the names of teachers and their salaries. The same to bo certified. From the same same, intimating that the election through an extraordinary vacancy on the Board would be held on 6th March next, and that Mr James Bruce was the only person nominated. From the same, notifimg the names ot persons nominated to fill the vacancies on the Board, and asking the Committee to send in the names of three of them by the 29th February, the election taking place on 6th March next. From the same, stating that the sum of £l2 9s 4d had been paid into the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of of the Committee for incidentals. From Mr F. Bethune, assistant teacher in the school, stating that he had been appointed to a school in the North Island, and asking for a testimonial from the Committee. It was unanimously decided to give Mr Bethune the testimonial requested. Proposed by Mr Cunningham, seconded by Mr Farrell and carried—- “ That Messrs Steward, It. A. Barker and A. Sherratt’s names be forwarded to the Board as members of the same.” HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The report of the Head Master was read, to the effect that the average attendance for the past four weeks was 164, and the highest attendance 186. He informed the Committee that Mr Bethane’s time expired on Monday next, and requested that certain maps might be procured for the Board-, It was decided that the Board be written to for the maps, and that on account of the approaching leaving of the school by Mr Bethune, the Board be aiked for the services of a temporary teacher. VISITING COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Mr Farrell, as one of the Visitors for the past month, stated that Mr C. E. Sherratt and himself had visited the school and had found everything working very satisfactorily, The Chairman remarked that Mr C. E, Sherratt and himself had inspected the roofing of the verandah, and they recommended that the whole of the same be re-roofed. Resolved—“ That the Board of Education be written to asking for the necessary amount to enable the Committee to have the repairs effected. VISITORS FOR THE MONTH. Messrs Cunningham and Dunlop were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. PUPIL TEACHERS. It was decided that a sub-Committee consisting of Messrs C. E. Sherratt, Pearpoint, and Farrell be appointed to confer with the Head Master re recommendation of pupil teacherships. The meeting then terminated. WOODBURY. A special meeting of this Committee was held 1 on the 25th February last, there being present Messrs J. H, Dean (Chairman), Wadlow, Connack, Cooling and J. McKenzie. The Chairman stated he had called the meeting to consider the nomination of candidates to fill the vacancies on the Board of Education, as the date on which the votes of Committee’s were to be sent in was the 29th of that month. After some ‘conversation on the matter it was proposed br Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Wadlow, and carried — “ That the following gentlemen be sup ported as members of the Board for South Canterbury : —Messrs W. J. Steward, R. A . Barker and W. Balfour.” The meeting then terminated.
