CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE
Tbe Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 22nd inst : The late cablegrams from London have had a depressing effect on the grain trade, particularly in wheat, and will no doubt tend to make growers reluctant to sell to local buyers at such prices as are offering for the new crop, the general feeling of our more opulent farmers being that they would prefer shipping on their own account. It is fortunate that the quantity per acre is on the average much greater than in former seasons, and will thus to a certain extent, compensate for the lower rates likely to obtain. Farmers are to be congratulated on the continuance of favorable weather for harvesting, which has been almost all that could be desired. The quotations for the week are as follows Wheat.—A few sales have taken place at 3s 6d, f.0.b., for intercolonial orders, Tbe prices offered, however, are so undecided in limit as to make it difficult to quote what might be considered a fair opening price. Oats.—Prime milling 2s Id to 2s 2d ; short feed, bright, 2s to 2s Id, f.0.b,, with a fair demand. Barley.—A few lines have been offered, for which 4s has been asked, but little business has transpired, buyers offering 3s 6d for fair samples. Grass Seed. -[n rye grass, farmers’ parcels, 3s to 3s 3d ; very prime, 3s 6d per bushel, at Christchurch, Cocksfoot, buyers are still offering 3Ad, f.o.b. Lyttelton, but growers refuse to quit at tbe price. Butter and Cheese. —7d to 8d for tbe former, and 3Jd to 5d for the latter
