ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 15. The steamship Duke of Westminster, which went ashore on the Isle of Wight on the 3rd inst., has been successfully floated, and brought safely to port. Jan. 16, In the course of a speech at Newcastle last night, the Right Honorable Joseph Chamberlain alluded to the occupation of Egypt by the British forces, and stated that the withdrawal of troops had only been delayed by the revolt in the Soudan, and that the Government still adhered to the proposal of the eventual evacuation of Egypt as previously announced. Obituary—The Earl of Bantry, aged 82. His son and heir, Viscount Berehaven, is in the colonies. There are 15,000 Christians and 40,000 Egyptians in the Soudan. The Standard says that the wholesale financial houses consider the minimum fixedt or the Victorian loan as too high, and that unless the public subscribe liberally the Banks will have to fall back on a syndicate. Jan. 17. In its issue this morning, the Daily News, in referring to the proposed Vic torian four million loan, doubts whether it will be successfully floated. An outbreak of fire occurred at No. 67, Oornhill, on the premises occupied by Messrs Silver, and is now (6 a.m.) increasing rapidly. The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend for the past half year at the rate of 18 per cent per annum, and carries forward £55,000 to the reserve. Calcutta, Jan. 15. The International Exhibition to date has been visited by 307,000 persons, and the interest taken in the display shows no signs of abating.

A movement is on foot with a view to the importation of frozen meat to Calcutta in connpction with the projected hue of direct steamers between India and Australia, and it is very probable that the necessary arrangements will shortly be completed, Cairo, Jan. 15.

Jan, 16. The Minister for War has abandoned the journey which he proposed to make to Khartoum in order to supervise the evacuation of the town by (he Egyptian garrison.
