WOODBURY SCHOOL.
The following is the Acting-Inspector of Schools, report on the recent examination of the Woodbury School, held on Thursday, November Bth, 1883 :-~- " Number on the books, 103 ; number present at examination, 100 ; number presented in Standards, 73 ; average attendance, 74. " Standard VI. presented 3, passed 2 ; Standard V., presented 11. passed 7 ; Standard IV., presented 16, passed 13 ; Standard 111., presented 10, passed 7 ; Standard 11., presented 14, passed 13 ; Standard 1., presented 19, passed 17 ; Totals presented 73, passed 59. Present classification of pupils : Standard VI., passed 2 ; Standard V., passed 8 ; Standard IV., passed 17 ; Standard 111, passed 10 ; Standard 11., passed 16 ; Standard 1., passed 19; below the Standards, 31; total, 103. "The Woodbury School is Tery satisfactorily classified, but although such a large number of pupils once more pass the Standards, their work in many instances is weak, the pass being only V gained. It would have been no discredit , to either teachers or pupils had many more failed, for the average age in each Standard is rather below that at which they are expected to pass. In the Sixth Standard, reading, writing and geography are good, spelling is fair, but the other subjects are weak, grammar especially so. In the Fifth Standard, reading, spelling and writing are good, history is very good, geography fair, grammar weak. With three exceptions the Fourth Standard candidates did very good work in all subjects excepting arithmetic. In 'T'hird Standard all subjects were rather weak. The pupils in the Second Standard have done very good work, and in the First Standard the work may be considered good. Time would not admit of an examination of the infant department on this visit. The needlework in most instances is well done. Some of the girls presented finished garments, but darning and mending —two most useful branches —are wanting. The order and discipline are ajood ; the registers are neatly and correctly kept, and the general tone of the scholars satisfactory. "John Guee, " Acting-Inspector."
