The English Government proposes ipeuding one hundred thousand pounds on defensive works at Aden. M. Tricon proceeds to Hue to compel the new King to sign a treaty with France, It is stated that the Turcos assaulted' Sontay in a most reckless manner, and one company was almost totally destroyed, The Observer thinks it would be wise of English statesmen in every way to assist the Australian colonies to the attainment of their National aspirations in the Pacific*. The garrison of-Sontay suffered a loss of 600 men, and the French captured 2,000,000 dollars. It is reported that acting on the advice of the Powers, tbe Chinese have retired to Bacninh. The session of the French Chamber has closed ; they will re-asserable on January 13th. The Orange leaders in Ulster propose to enrol an armed Orange militia. A pilgrimage is to be made to the tomb of Victor Emanuel on January Ist by 100,000 masons. Dec. 31, Telegrams to hand from Newfoundland reports that the town and harbor of Graceport, the scene of the recent riots between Orangemen and Catholics, is now quiet, and a recurrence of the disturbance is not anticipated. M. Ferry has promised that an early opportunity shall be taken to revise the French constitution. China appears disposed to make further concessions to France. Courbet has returned to Hanoi. Messrs Alexader Brogden and Henry Brogden, the well-known railway contractors, filed a petition of insolvency on Wednesday. The liability of each is set down at three-quarters of a million sterling. St. Petersburg, Dec. 30. Colonel Indeiken, of the Russian Gendarmerie, was murdered to-day by Nihilists. No trace of the assassins has yet been obtained. Cairo, Dec. 30. Despatches have been received from | the Soudan, stating that the garrison at Zezirch, near Berbek, was recently attacked by a large force of rebel fanatics, but the latter, after several hours’ fighting, were repulsed with heavy loss.

Melbourne, Dec. 30.
The police to-day made a raid upon raagsmen and others suspected of belonging to the criminal class of this city, and arrested thirteen persons. The Intercolonial Cricket Match was resumed to-day. The Victorians in their second innings scored the required number of runs (139) for the loss of seven wickets, and thus won the match by three wickets. McDonnell (42) wa? the highest scorer. Jan. 1.
The Australasian’s agricultural reporter estimates the yield of wheat for the present season in Victoria at 15 bushels per acre. The area under crop is 1,010,000 acres. The export is estimated at 8,400,000 bushels.

An extraordinary case of mutiny and murder occurred on board the Swedish brig Natal on 26th November last, while bound from Boston to this port. The captain and mate we re attacked in their cabin and wounded, and simultaneously the second mate (captain s son) was killed and thrown overboard. In the scrimmage which took place afterwards, the captain was shot dead by the murderers. One of the sailors and the carpenter obtained the assistance of a passing vessel and arrived here. The three mutineers were arrested.
