GERALDINE PUBLIC SCHOOL EXAMINATION.

On Monday and Tuesday last, Mr Gurr, the Acting-Inspector for the South Canterbury Board of Education, examined the Geraldine Public School with tha following results :

" Report of examination held on Dec. 10th and 11th, JBB3. Head teacher, Mr T. Hughes ; Mistress, Miss Hamilton ; Assistant, Mr F, Bethune ; Pupil teachers, Miss F. b'reeman and Master Erskine. "Number on the books, 224 ; number presented at examination, 171; presented in standards, 116 ; average attendance, 167.

" Standard VI : presented 5, passed 4; Standard V : presented 12, passed 5; Standard IV: presented 17, passed 5; Standard 111 : presented 20, passed 6 ; Standard II : presented 28, passed 21 ; Standard I : presented 34, passed 33 ; Total presented 116, passed 74. Percentage gained, 63 7. " Present classification of pup ils—Standard Vf, passed 4 : Standard V", passed 6 ; Standard IV, passed 15 ; Standard 111, passed 24; Standard 11, passed 39 ; Standard I, pushed 49; below the Standards, 87. Total, 224.

" The Gdtv.Wine School has not made a high percentage this year. The school is, however, satisfactorily classified. The low percentages have been made by the sth, 4th and 3rd Standards. In the 4th and 3rd, the pupils were quite unprepared for their work, but their average iges are below those expected for their respective Standards, and they will make good candidates for next year, The 2nd Standard did fairly, and 6th and Ist Standards have done very good work. Composition is rather a weak subject. Science- was well presented. The singing is good, and the action songs of the infants were admirably rendered. The sewing is above the average. The order, discipline and behavior are very creditable. I seriously recommend Mr Hughes not to advance those pupils who have failed at this examination. "John Gujrr, " Inspector. "December 11th, 1883."
