THE TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL.

The annual distribution of prizes at the Timaru High School took place last Friday. The school was nicely decorated with flowers and evergreens, Samples of the work of the pupils were exhibited on the walls of three of the rooms, and the visitors to the school expressed themselves highly pleased with them. The distribution of prizes took place in the main room, which was well tilled. The chair was taken by the Yen. Arch deacon Harper, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, His Worship the Mayor, the Rev Mr Gillies, Mr J. H, Sutter, and Mr J. C. McKerrow, members of the Board, also being present. The Chairman opened the meeting by calling upon the Rector to read his annual report. It stated that the fourth speech day completed the most successful year the High School had yet had, and that the school was now as efficient at he could hope it would be for some years. They might hope for a gradual increase of the number of pupils attending which had averaged ninety last year. The report expressed satisfaction at the result of the examination by Professors Brown and Shand, and stated that by frequent examinations during the year they were enabled to detects subjects which were rising above or falling below the average of an efficient secondary school, and, by amending the time table so as to give fair play to the various departments, made failure in any leading subject impossible. The report then referred to subjects not mentioned in the examination, viz, needlework, map-drawing, drawing, painting, book-keeping, and engrossing, and concluded by expressing thanks to many kind friends of the school for prizes—to Mrs John Jackson, Mrs Cramond, Mr P. W. Hutton, Mr Gillies, Mr Bilton, Mr Plante, Dr Lovegrove, Mr Talbot, Mr R. R. Taylor and several others. The Chairman congratulated the Rector on the efficient state of the school, and addressed a few words to those about to receive prizes, pointing out to them that it was not the money valve of their prizes they should consider, but the distinction that winning a prize conferred on them.
