Tbmtjka Road Board.—The monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board takes place to-day. Contractors are reminded that tenders for works must be in before 10.30 a.m. Til Hiltoh Mail Sbeviob.—A publio meeting is to take place in theKakahu public schoolroom on Friday evening next to consider matters relating to the Temuka and Hilton Mail Service. ROBBEBY AT WaLLINGTOff.—A mysterious robbery is reported from Makara, Wellington. William McKelvie, a settler there, had 517 sovereigns, the savings of years, deposited in a wooden box under the bed in a lower room. Between 4.30 and six on Thursday evening, the whole family being.absent looking after the cows, the house was entered ind the money abstracted. The police think they possess a clue. SbbtiOK of Sons. — A very interesting Service of Song, entitled " Uncle Tom," will be given by the children attending £• t. Saviour's Church, Temuka, assisted by the choir next Thursday evening, under the Conductor* ship of Mr W. G. Rutland, in the Temuka "Volunteer Hall. Great trouble _ has been taken by the Conductor in the rehearsals, and the performers are well up in their parts. Those attending will be amply repwd. AcoiDßtiT to a Railway EKQiHB.-On Saturday last the boiler of one of the) small railway engines, used in shunting at Tinmru, burst, and the dome was thrown fully 100 ft into the air. In falling it alighted on the edge of the railway p'atform, and smashed two or three of the two inch planks. No one was hurt and no other damage was done. The noise of tho explosion, and the volumne of steam emitted caused a great sensation in Timaru, and a rush was made for the railway i station.
Gold Beabibqßebf in Cantbebxtbt.— The prospectors sent by the Premier Company to examine the gorge of the Uakuia havo returned to Chriitehurch, and report having discovered* gold bearing reef six feet wide. The specimens brought iuto town show gold in the stone. The payable nature i» unknown until a practical test has boon made. Pbdestbianiih.—The 24 hours' walkiig match between Edwards and Scott for £SO concluded at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Edwards winning by 80 yards. Scott was leading at halfpast 8, and had then half a mile to the good. Some 600 spectators were j. re* ent at the finish. The Doctor who attended him gave his opinion that the man died from alco • holic poisoning. f "'! »■ A Famov/8 Bakbb.—On /Saturday evening last, in Timaru, the effigy of a baker—who has made himself obnoxious to the other members of his craft by withdrawing from acompact entered into by them to raise the price of bread—was paraded through the town accompanied by a ''band" playing " The Dead March," andjfinaljy disposed of in the sea, South of the breakwater. .;,';••: VnoO Taa Alibobd.„Combt I—A,,correspondent of the Dunedin Star at Queenstown, telegraphs that the enormous aerolite •which was seen in the heavens there on Wednesday last, struck the earth near a farm, shaking the ground terribly. The shock was. felt; throughout the whole district, and the "atmosphere became cldse in the extreme. : A portion 1 of the aerolite fell at Skipper's, destroying a stable and setting a telephone bell ringing. , Thb, Vxotobiaw Bakk:, Bobbbbt.—-The father of Corbett,>the Victorian Bank robber, returned the £4OO of the reward trhich was allotted to the family, stating (that he only put in a claim for it to prevent people from getting it who were not entitled to it. The Commercial Bank, however; ;; returned the money to him, on the ground' that its retention would be open to misconstruction, stating the opinion that the integrity of the father had not been compromised, by the evil deeds of the eon. Rbibigbbating Company.—At a meeting of the Directors of the South Canterbury Be* frigerating Company (Limited) held on Tuesday last, at Timaru, it was decided, after a considerable amount of discussion, that Mr Rhodes' offer of land on the Waimataitai Creek should be accepted, to include the purchase of a private road. The .Directors also decided that interest at the rate of 10 per cent should be charged on unpaid allotment fees, &c., after the 14th insfc. Alio that a premium of 2s 6d per share will bs charged on all shares applied for 'after that date.

Mr Bryce had an interview with Wahanui Rewi, Toanui and other leading Ngatimaniopoto chiefs > oh Friday at Rewi'i house at Kihikihi, and urged them to have their titles investigated in the Native Lands Court. They expressed iheir willingness generally, but when asked to sign applications for a hearing, they asked further time: to consider. It is believed these negotiations will result in the final opening of the Sing Country to sptrlcmont.. Mr Bryce told the Kingites that to facilitate the investigation of the title of any block of land they may bring before the Native Lands Court, he will undertake to send two Judges to the. Waikato dut.net, to remain two years if necessary, and move about from place to place.
Okb Huhdbbd Miles ok a. Tbictcmi.—A Chriatchurch paper says that this distancA was covered by Mr. i. E. Preece, of thd Pioneer Bicycle Club, on an Excelsior tricyol* on Tuesday Mast. Commencing his journey from Weston, Papanui at four in th« morning, he rode via Woodend to Oxford, arming there at 11.20; returning by the ' same route he again passed Oust, Fernside, Rangiora, "Woodend, Kaiapoi, Styx, ami Papanui; then Chrißtohurch, along the Ferry road, until Sumner was reached, at 10.25 p.m.; si ill continuing his journey, he again reached Weston at 11.50, thus riding 100 miles ia nineteen hours fifty minutes, baring four hours and fire minutes to spare, which easily might have been increased, but Mr Preec* did not intend to make particularly fait tim«.
Ihtbkkal, Econoky or Ohbaf Restmn *ants.—Chenp restaurants (says the Christ* cliuivii Telegraph) are, no, doubt, very convenient in-titutions in their way, but no ' one, it is lo be supposed, would care to ; enquire too closely into their internal arrangements. Sometimes, however, a glimpse of them, as well as the " whiff " of cooked meats which can be had at any time, is afforded to the outsiders. A cook, who valued his services at £2 per week sued on Tuesday moruing, at the E.M. Court, the proprietor of one of these establishments. He bad been discharged, without warning, after only a few hours service, and ho claimed a week's wages* He got the saek, it appeared,' because his carving —-his employer, who is a German, called it carfing—was not in accordance with the prevailing depression. He could "carf" quickly onough—a hundred and twenty hun« gry men in the short space of an hour was pro f sufficient of that. But he filled tha plates too liberally, especially when hit customers, like Oliver Twist, "asked for more;" This was the trouble. "If" said the boss, " you carfs like that, I vas ruint in , months!" There was some grumbling about " buddings" and •' darts," and a nasty / disclosure about " sour " sausages m the disagreement, but the real fault of the cook —i and carver—was that he did not understand! how to put five upon four. Anyhow thai cook got his money, and the master said b* got a better "carifer," and;,m both w«M suited. /
