AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS

TIMAKU. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horses—About 45 draught and light horses came forward to their yards for sale. They have to report a very dull demand for almost all kinds, and prices offering not such as to induce any business being done. They do not anticipate much business in this class of stock until harvest time approaches. They quitted to-day about 15 head at from L 25 ;; to L3O for good heavy draughts, Ll 6 to L 23 for medium sorts, For hack and light harness horses there is almost no enquiry; a few changed hands to-day at from L 5 to Ll2. ■Sheep—Store sheep are now being enquired for, and prices asked are far in advance to what were current in former seasons. At the Washdyke yards last Monday they yarded 400 crossbred ewes ; these were sold privately after the sale at a satisfactory figure. They have also placed privately a small line of crossbred hoggets at a good price. Fat sheep—They sold privately a line of 200 wethers at market prices, and notice that both in Dunedin and in Christchurch markets last Wednesday a considerable rise in price took place, good mutton fetching from 3d to 34d per lb.

Cattle The demand is somewhat better for store cattle, and as these are becoming rather scarce in this district, ir, is more than likely that prices will be better than they have been. At the Washdyke yards last Monday a full entry was received ; they penned over 170 head, the most of them finding purchasers at the following prices, viz. : —Well forward steers, up to L 6 ; heifers, L 3 to L4s 10s ; one to two-year-old steers and heifers, L:i 3s to L 3 ; yearlings, at from 30s to L2; calves, 25s to 30s. They sold privately to day a 6mall line of steers, consisting of 30 head, at a satisfactory price. Fat cattle—Present values are about 25s per 1001 b, at which price they sold a few lots at the Washdyke on the. 19th inst.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS,

Sydney, Not, 28. Few Zealand wheat, per bushel, 2s 9d ?; New Zealand oats, 2s Id:; maize, 2s Id. Sugar Company’s No. 1 pieces, per ton, L 34. Adelaide, Nov. 23. Wheat has advanced to 4s 6d ; the market is steady. Flour is flat, and prices are nominal; town brands LlO to LlO ss, country brands ditto L 9 10« to L 9 15s. Freights to London per sailing vessels 45s to 50s, freights to United Kingdom from Adelaide per sailing vessels 40s to 425; the quotations are nominal. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, Nov. 22. At the wool sales to-day, 10,000 bales were catalogued. The tone of the auction was firm, and there was a good demand for Australian crossbred. Later, At to-day’s*wool sale the catalogue comprised 9100 bales. The tone of the* sale was again firm. Coarse crossbred wools are rather higher than at the close of last sales. The withdrawals since the opening of the present series amount to 2700 bales, out of 28,900 catalogued, Nov. 23. Colonial breadsluffs continue steady at the following prices, ex store ;—Ade laide w heat, per 4961b5, 46s 6d ■; New Zealand do, 38s 6d to 44s 6d, according to quality ; Adelaide flour, per 280 lbs, 82s,

Australian tallow is improving, prices having to-day advanced 6d per cwt. Best beef is quoted at 38s 6d ; best mutton, 39s 6d.
