London, Nov. 22.
The Secretary to the London and San Francisco Bank (limited) has absconded. His defalcations are stated to amount to £50,000. A general strike of coal miners throughout England will take place on the Ist December, unless the dispute between masters and men can be settled in the meantime. The death is announced of Count Frederick De Legrange, a well-known patron of the turf, aged 67. Nov. 23. A vacancy having occurred in the representation of York city in the House of Commons, an election took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr Milner, a Conservative, who defeated Mr Lockwood, the Liberal candidate} but only by a narrow majority. The first portion of the cargo of mutton ex steamship Doric, from New Zealand, was placed on the market this morning, and realised s£d per lb. The police to-day effected the arrest at Yauxhall of a German Socialist named Wolf, who has been under surveillance for some time, in consequence of suspicious movements on his part. In his possession; when arrested were two infernal machines, which were at once seized and destroyed. The prisoner is understood to have had in view the destruction of the German Embassy in Carlton House Terrace, S.W., the official residence of Count Munster, the German Ambassador. Nov. 24. The ordination of Dr Barry, Bishopelect of Sydney, has been announced to take place in Westminster Abbey on New I ear’s Day. His Lordship sails for Australia in February. Mardid, Nov. 24. Prince Frederick William, the German Crown Prince, arrived here to-day, on a visit to King Alfonso, His Koyal Highness met with a cordial reception along the route to the Palace. ; Durban (Natal), Nov. 23. Intelligence is to hand.from Zululand that complete anarchy prevails. in the northern districts, owing to the disaffected state of the native tribes in that locality, and the frequent hostilities which occur between various lival chieftains.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE
Melbourne, Nov. 24. The Agent-General for Victoria in London has telegraphed to the Government that the French Cabinet have decided to proceed with the transportation of criminals, notwithstanding the recent rejection by the Senate of the principal clause. Sydney, Nov. 24. News has been received that six Frenchmen have landed at Ballina, on the coast of this colony. They are believed to have escaped from New Caledonia.
