MEETING AT HILTON.

• A meeting of the residents was held at the schoolroom, Hilton, on Tuesday afternoon last for the purpose of taking into consideration matters connected with the mail service for the district. There was a large attendance. Mr John Kelland was voted to the chair, and briefly stated the object of the meeting, informing those present that a coach was now running between Temuka and Hilton, and they had met that evening for the purpose of urging on |he Government the necessity of establishing a mail service by means or coach connection, as by so doing the district would be largely benefited. He also stated that at their request the member for the district Postlethwaite) was present, whom he would ask to explain what in his opinion was best to do in order that their request should be granted. Mr Postiethwaite then informed the meeting what had previously been done In an attempt to get the mails carried in this way by the coaches. He also quoted from returns, which he had in his possession, the amount of correspondence which left the Post Offices of Hilton, Gapes’ Valley and Pleasant Valley. He also stated that his opinion was that if the proposed services included the offices above mentioned the Government might be willing to grant their request, Mr Mundell then fully explained several matters relating to the carriage of mails, and his experience in such matters.

After a short discussion, it was pro-/-^stidrby.Mr, John Hay, seconded by i --Mi-Ratrick; Ryan, and carried—“ That ' this meeting desires respectfully to ask -to grant a tri-weekly to Rleasant Valley, Gapes’ ; Valley and Hilton, via Temuka. instead of as at present (a coach funning three days a week between the ,two last mentioned places), which is the most direct and convenient route.”

Mr Kelland proposed, and Mr Patrick Ryan seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr Fostletbwaite for being present on the occasion, especially when the state of the rivers was taken into consideration. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, proposed by Mr Mundell, the meeting terminated.
