Sir Samuel Wilson has purchased a large estate in Derbyshire for £200,000. Mr Rnsdeu's ' History of Australia.' has been published. ' Three cases ot sheepskins consigned to a Birmingham firm> from Adelaide, have been seized, it having been ascertained that they contained detona-v tors.

The trial of the Fenian, Pool, for the murder of Mr Kenny, has been proceeding in Dublin for some days past. The case concluded yesterday, but the jury were unable to agree upon a verdict and were discharged.
The rumors in reference to the execu
tion of officials and the advance of the French in Madagascar requires confirmation. It has. been decided that the late Archbishop Vaughan's body shall be sent to Sydney. The Marquis of Lome, in an article to the Contemporary Review, argues that Federation will work smoothly, providing that no province is too powerful. The Spectator, commenting on the matter, warns Australia that the national energy and wealth of Victoria will possibly endanger the success of Federation,

A race lias been arranged from Plymouth to Queensland between the yacht Vestal and the shfp Northern Monarch. The vessels will sail on the 24th hist. ;
At a meeting of the Eastern Extension Australasian and China Telegraph Company, Mr Pender stated that if Australia would secure the Company the present earnings and also the beneS fit arising out of the natural increase in the basiness, the Company would be prepared to considerably reduce the present tariff. The Morning Post, in an article on Australian federation, asserts that such a step would meet with universal approval. The Transvaal Envoys demand a Convention based on similar terms to the. Sand River Conference.
Ic has transpired that the articles; seized as being detonators are only patent burglar Alarms. News from Madagascar has been received that the Hovas have offered to negotiate with the French tor a settlement of the difficulty. The French have commenced a bombardment at Foul Point.
Alexandria, Nov. 12.
The withdrawal of British troops from Egypt will be completed during the present month. It has been decided that only three English regiments shall remain in the country, and they will act as a garrison in this city.

Prince Frederick William, Crown Prince, leaves here on Thursday; next for Madrid to return the visit which King Alfonso recently paid to the German Emperor.

M, de Giers, the .Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, arrived here to day. In the course of an interview between His Excellency and Prince Bismarck, M. de Giers took occasion to affirm the
existence of friendship between the German aad the Russian Governments.

Intelligence is to hand from Madagascar that the Hovas in considerable force are now occupying a strong position about seven mileß from Tamatave, and are prepared to vigoiously resist the projected advance of the French troops on Tananarivo.

The Lutheran quadri-centenary has been celebrated generally throughout the United States by services in the various churches.
Capetown, Nov. 13.
Telegrams have been received from Zululand announcing that two severe engagements have been fought between several Zulu tribes and the followers of TJsibepu, resulting in the rout of the latter on both occasions.
Durban, Nov. 14.
Cetewayo, who has been the guest of Mr Osborne, the British Commissioner in Zululand, since he has surrendered to the Imperial authorities, will shortly proceed to Capetown.
It is announced that the British troops now stationed on the Zulu frontier are to be withdrawn,
Cairo, Nov. 14.
It is reported that another detachment of Egyptian troopo, which was stationed at Suakins, a seaport on the Red Sea; and the scene. of the massacre of Egyptian troops by hillmen on the 29th uit„ have been attacked and routed with heavy loss bp the rebels.

Melbourne, Nov. 14.
It is doubted whether Knowles, the confessed murderer of Bates, the actor, is sane.
The Hon J. White, of Sydney, won £3700 in stakes by Martini-Henri's wins during the late "V.R.C. meeting. A telegram to haad from Alice Springs, one of the stations on the overland telegraph line, states that news reached there this morning that Giles's police party of five, who were sent in search of the missing exploring party under Radford, have suffered great privations. Three of Giles's party perished from thirst, but Mr Giles himself and a boy are safe.
