GERALDINE PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY'S CONCERT.

On Wednesday evening last, the first concert given by the members of the above Society was, held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Geraldine, and, considering th e wretched state of the weather, there was

a fairly large and appreciative audience,

When, itis taken into consideration that the Society has been in existence only a few months, the first practice having been Held on September 4th last, too much praise cannot be accorded to its members 'for the ! way in which they have worked. Thesociety is also to be congratulated in securing the services of Mr J H Edmonds as .conductor, and Miss Fish as pianiste. Tjheifact of this young lady being concede d with the Society gave it a prestige wriic'h'means success in every sense of the word.-' It is;not our intention to criticise the individual efforts of those who took p£trt in the entertainment, as it would be manifestly unfair to do so ; suffice it to say that one and all acquitted themselves creditably. We cannot, however, allew the present opportunity to pass without also stating that the Misses Duniop. Andrews, Taylor and Kirby promise well to become; first-class soloists.

i The first part of the programme commenced with the glee by Dr Cooke, * Hark the Lark.' Miss Taylor followed with the song,'' Oh; give io me those early flowers.' Miss Hamilton'. Mrs Edmonds and Mr Hughes then sang the trio, • Mark the merry elves.' The. pianoforte duet, ( La rianse; Napolitaine,' by the Misses Fish applauded. The song by Mr W- followed.; Ibis gentleman was suffering from a Severe'-'cold; but he went through the song r mq'Bt creditably. The part song, by male'voices!' Hark the Merry drum,' was really,a; treat, the .voices harmonising very nidely., Mrs Glass' song, Turnham •Toll, 1 was well received, Mr Edmonds in that 1 Well-known songi ; 'The death of Nelson,' Was vociferously encored, to which ho .resppnde.d(.with;;!;L'fear ' no foe;' The chorus, 'To Rome's immortal leader}' •brought the, first pfart of the programme to a close!.. ' •'

i The second;jpartof the entertainment commenced with the glee, 'Sweet and low,' followed by the song, ' Hark the drum,' by Mr T Sherratt. Miss Dunlop then sang 'Apart' very nicely. The double quartette 'The ash grove,'(harmonised by Mr J H Edmonds) was well received, and Miss Andrews received a deafening encore for her rendition of the song ' Dreamland,' This lady, in response, sang the last verse over again. Next came the soDg, with chorus, ' The Midshipmite,' by Mr Willoughby. This song is always a very popular one, and a well-deserved encore was demanded, 'Mr.., Willoughby repeated the last verse. The duet,' The falling of the leaf,' by tbe Misses , Fish (accompanied on the piano

by Master Fred; Fish), fairly brought dbwn the house, and a call was responded to by" the .ladies singing' Fairy Elves.' Mr Edmonds sang ' The noble boy of truth,' which we understand is his masterpiece, and received a perfect ovation, but he merely bowed his acknowledgment. The chorus, with solo, ' Now Tramp,' followed, after which Mr T Sherratt, on behalf-of the Society, came forward, and, whilst thanking the audience for their attendance, announced that at Christmas a; sacred 'concret would be given. He hoped, owing to the short time the Society had practiced, those present would excuse any little detects that might have besn notjced.

; The singing of tbe National Anthem by the Whole of the company terminated a very enjoyable evening.
