THE GERALDINE RAGES V. THE GERALDINE RACING COMMITTEE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The ways of the Geraldine Racing Committee are passing strange, and in my opinion past finding out. I understand that the Committee are making preparations to shift the Grand Stand from its present position to a rough piece of ground on the west side of the course, and that the contract for levelling the land, preparatory to the stand being erected thereon, is let for £3O. There is no need to go into detail as to what the Committee are going to do, but I will just explain, in as short a manner as possible, bow the matter at present stands. To shift, the Grand Stand and its appurtenances will cost, at the least, something between £3OO and £4OO. I would like to lay.it before the, Geraldine Racing Club as a body as to whether they arcji cognisant of what is being done witli the funds of the, Club. Would it not have been far wiser if the Committee had, at the first, called a meeting of the members of the Club to have considered the advisability or otherwise of incurring so great an expenditure ? Would it not be possible to consult the gentleman on whose property the races have been carried on in former . years ? The present course has given little or. no satisfaction, as all racing men ; have complained as to its unfitness, and say that the old course was one of the best they had ever run on in New Zealand. I have heard one of the Committee say that they would not take £6OO to have the course shifted back to the old ground. I should like to know who> in the first place, elected this Committee, or who gave it such absolute power as to deal with the funds of the Club as it likes, as I don’t consider there is one responsible person in this Committee. At the next annual meeting of the Club I am sure the present Committee will not be reelected, but more responsible persons will be put in their places, who will not only consult the wishes of the whole of the Club itself but of the district at large also. 1 have written th J in order to let several members of the Club become aware of what is being dbile, ‘as I am sute thero ■are / some who are quite in the dark as to what the intentions of the Committee really; are in regard to the present course,—lam etc,
