SCENE AT A SUICIDE’S FUNERAL.
The'funeral of the would-be murderer and suicide,, .David Mackay, at Aston, near Birmingham, has been made the occasion of a most remarkable demonstration. Mackay, who "was formerly the manager at Kyuock’s Ammunition Works, at Witton, attempted to murder his wife, who was some 1 thirty' years'bis junior, by cutting her throat. The motive of the crime was jealousy.; Mackay afterwards attempted to commit suicide by cutting his own throat, but recovered, and at the last Warwick Assizes was sentenced to penal” servitude. A few days ago he committed suicide in Warwick Gaol by hanging himself. Great sympathy was expressed for’the deceased man by his friends, who felt that 1 the cnraa w«a committed under circumstances of the strongest i provocation. They requested the Governor of 'the gaol tb fallow them to bury the body, andaTsatisfactory reply having-been received, a subscription was smarted) with the object, of giving him an imposing funeral. i,The[ necessary sum was promptly ;pbtained. and hundreds of his old colleagues joined in, the procession to the grave, Sp.yiolent was the feeling expressed:toyv.-prda the.yquing. widow that sue was compelled for safety to shelter herself pn a ; neighbor’s house. Stones and' other missiles Were thro at the house; and several women employed at Kyntick’s Works iassembled! outside, and threatened the woman . .with violence if she came‘fout.. i The • wdrliiin’a mother, dressed iu deep black, followed the cortbgelin a icab; but she was recognised by the mob, violently threatened, and had to be escorted home by a detachment of police. Great excitement prevailed throughout the entire district.
