TEMUKA HIGH SCHOOL.

'i yThe usual monthly mseting of the above School Committee was held last Tuesday evening. Present Messrs Kirk (in the chair), Aspinall,o'Hal!oran and Blyth. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and coDfirnced, corkespondench. Correspondence was road from th<a Secretary to the Board of Education, asking for a refund of £20, : given sometime ago by the Board to the Committee for planting purposes, as the Board intended to do the planting. It was decided to allow the matter to stand over until there was a large meeting. From the janitor, asking for a rise of wages of £2O a year, on account of his dut'es having been increased. The application was not entettained under existing circumstances. HEAD MASTER'S REPORT. " K. P. Gray, Esq., " Dear Sir—The following is my monthly report on the school : " Number on roll : Boys, 220 ; girls, 193; total, 413. Strict average attendance. : Boys, 154; girls, 125 ; total, 279. Working average attendance : Boys, 157 ; girls, 129 ; total, 286. Highest attendance : Boys, 176 ; girls, 147 ; total, 323. " I am sorry to report that Mrs Rowe is absent through illness. I scarcely think she will be able to continue her duties to the end of the month, when her resignation takes effect. I therefore wish to bring before you the urgent necessity of obtaining temporary assistance at once, till a permanent Infant Mistress can be appointed. Since entering the new school building, a number of pupils have been enrolled—chiefly in the infant department. In and under Standard I, we have now a daily attendance of over 160 children. At present I hava placed the most advanced pupil teacher over these, and taken the three higher Standards myself. ; but this arrangement, as you will easily understand, is very unsatisfactory. I have found ifc impossible under the : circumstances to take up the secondary subjects this week.. I think they ought to be discontinued until the teaching staff is so organised as to allow me time to take them up properly ; but on this matter I shall be glad to have the instructions of the Committee. " The old furniture is not' now sufficient for the wants of the school. I wish also to bring under your notice a few things which I think the school requires—a set of maps :at least those of the British Isles, Australia, Africa, and North and South America; a globe ; a school bell; a ball-frame and box of form and color for the infants, and n clock. Some foolscap paper is also requited for examination purposes. •' I would respectfully ask the Committee to define the duties, of the caretaker, as he does not consider the cleaning and filling of the ink bottles as part of them. « The iHionl requisites ordered some time ago I havr* not yet received, and a number of copies are required.—-I am, ttc, "John Wood. " P.S.—The number of scholars at school today, Oct. 16th, was 347." VISITING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Mr O'Halloran reported that he had visited the school several times during the month, and found that the janitor's work had been very unsatisfactorily done. As the teaching staff was insufficient, he suggested that the matter should bo represented to the Board at once.

MISCELLANEOUS. The Secretary was instructed to writo to the Board of Education, urging tbo necessity for an Infant Mistress being appointed temporarily during Mrs Rowe's illness, and also stating that the Committee had made arrangements ■ with Mr Meager to continue his duties mntil the end of the year. Also that the school furniture is totally inadequate to the requirements, especially in the infant department. It was decided to inform the Head , Master that the Committee think it advisable not to commence teaching the secondary subjects until the beginning of next year. It was decided, on the motion of Mr O'Halloran, seconded by Mr Bljth, to apply to the Boatd of Education for a complete set of maps, one globe, school bell, ope ball-frame and a box of form and color for the infant department,. aud one large eight day clock; and also to ask the Board to send the requisites already ordered. •'■■ - THE LATE CONCERT. The Secretary reported that he had £2B 12s 61 from the proceeds of the late concert, and that there was something more to come in, which would probably bring the sum up to £3O. The expenses were £5 12s 6d, It was decided to place the proceeds to the credit of the prize fund account. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £3 2s 9d were passed for payment.

VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Aspinall and Kirk were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. . ' ■ ' ADJOURNMENT. ;' The meeting then adjourned. \>\
