The Marquis of Lansdowne, accompanied by the Marchioness, sails for Canada on Friday next to assume the Governor-Generalship of the Dominion in succession to the Marquis of Lome. The latter,with Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise, returns to England at the end of this month.

It has transpired that Sir Evelyn Wood, commander of the British army in Egypt, is favorable to the withdrawal of the bulk of the troops at an early date. He has expressed bis willingness to be answerable for order in tho country with native troops. Bishop Short was interred to-day at at Whirblington Church, beside the remains of his parents,
The New South Wales exhibitors at the Amsterdam Exhibition intend to present a portion of their exhibits to the Dutch Colonial Museum, and the balance will either be sold or presented to Calcutta.
The steamer Maranoa, built for the Queensland Shipping Company, has made a trial trip, and averaged fourteen knots. Speaking at the Luncheon on board, Sir Charles’ Lilley, Chief Justice of Queensland, warmly condemned the apathy of Lord Derby with respect to the annexation of New Guinea. The Aborigines’ Protection Society have directed the attention of Lord Derby to the recent cruise of the labor vessel Fanny, and to the charges made by Mr G. B. Morrison, explorer, of the revolting treatment to which the native women of Polynesia have been subjected. Lord Derby has requested the Governments of Queensland and Fiji to report upon the matter. A body of Roumanian soldiers seized an Austrian barracks on the frontier. The Austrians, however, recaptured the position, after taking sixty prisoners. The Times states that Sir H, B. W. Brand, G.C.8., is about to retire from the Speakership of the House of Commons. Parh, Oct. 9. It is now officially announced that General Campenon, and not General Sausier, has been appointed to succeed General Thebaudin as Minister of War. An official telegram from Tonquin, published to-day, states that the* Black Flags’ have now evacuated Sontay. state in addition they generally fall back at all points hrf re the French. M. Ferry has issued instructions to the French commander at Tonqnin to push the operations against the enemy with all possible speed, complete the occupation of Anam, and the subjugation of the ‘ Black Flags ’ as quickly as possible.

Information has been published here that a fresh treaty has been concluded between France and the kingdom of Cambodia, which adjoins the French colony of Cochin China, and has been under a French protectorate since 1862. The present Treaty cedes to France all the revenues arising from indirect taxation, and reaffirms the protectorate enjoyed by France oyer the kingdom,
Mardid, Oct. 10
It has transpired that a demand was made to the French Government for further reparation than that already accorded by President Grdvy’s apology for the insult offered to King Alfonso in Paris. The demand having beau refused by the French Government, King Alfonso required that further action should be taken in the matter j but as the Spanish Ministry have now been unable to agree that such a course was necessary, the Premier, Senor Sagasta, tendered to His Majesty the resignation of hiraselt and his colleagues.

AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Adelaide, Oct. 11. A large sum of money is reported to be missing from the Town and Country Bank in this city. The teller when balancing his cash on Monday last found 850 notes missing. The police are now prosecuting inquiries, but it i» understood that no clue to the robbery has yet been obtained. ,
