TEMPERANCE UNION IN GERALDINE.
On Tuesday evening last, at the close of the meeting of the Blue Ribbon Army in the Primitive Methodist Church, the Rev Mr Hayes in the chair, and at which there was a large attendance of persons interested, including the Good Templars' and other officers in official regalia, the Chairman spoke at some length on the advantages to be derived in the establishing of a local branch of the South Canterbury Temperance Union in the district. The Chairman also expressed his regret that Mr Barker, of Peel Forest, acting as a deputation from the parent society in Christchurch, was unable to be present. He called on Mr W S Maslin to address the meeting. The latter then stated that the Good Templars had already taken the initiatory stops in the matter, and had forwarded a list of names of persons desirous of becoming members of the branch to Christchurch. Mr T Sherratt then made a few remarks showing the advantages of the Union. A general conversation then ensued, in which Mr Huffey took part, on the proposed laws for the government of the Union which were submitted from the parent society. There was a general desire expressed that more information should be obtained, especially bearing on the members' fees. The President then stated that Mr Barker had told him that he would get more information on the subject, and suggested that Mr Barker should be invited to attend the next meeting. A number of names of intending members were then received, and as the affiliation fee had already been forwarded, it was decided at once to open the branch. The e'ection of officers for the ensuing twelve months was then proceeded with, with the following result:—President, the Rev W B Hayes ; VicePresidents, Messrs George Patrick and J Huffey; Secretary, Mr T Sherratt; Treasurer, Mr W S Maslin. A powerful working Committee was then appointed. It was resolved to hold the next meeting next Tuesday week in the Primitive Methodist Church. A vote of thanks was passed to the Rev Chairman and the meeting terminated.
