ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Oct. 4.
The failure is announced to-day of Metssrs Suis and Sabelh, general merchants, Lime street, City. Their liabilities are set down at a quarter of a million sterling, Other failures are apprehended in London and the provinces? and an uneasy feeling prevails in mercantile circles.
An election took place to-day at Manchester for a member of the House of Commons in the room of Mr Hugh Birley, deceased, Mr Holdsworth, a Conservative, was placed at the head of the poll, defeating the Radical candidature by an immense majority. Mr a Liberal, had announced his candidate, but at the last moment abstained from going to the poll. Latest intelligence from Madagascar is to the effect that the Hovas are making active preparations for a renewal of hostilities. The French forces are stated to be numerically weak, and their position somewhat precarious. Oct, 5. A Company is projected, with a capital of £200,000, to stock 4000 square miles of territory at the mouth of the Victoria (Barcoo) river, South Australia. Oct. 6, The Court of Enquiry appointed to investigate the circumstances under which the Orient steamship Austral foundered in Port Jackson on November 11th last year, has concluded its sittings, and delivered judgment- to-day. The Court finds that the capsizing of the vessel was due to water entering the after ports, through coaling being carried on at one side of the vessel for too long a time, causing her to heel over. The ship, however, was pronounced to be perfectly stable in every respect. The casualty was due to a series of small mistakes, none of which were held to bo sufficiently serious to justify the Court in dealing with the officers’ certificates. The Court added a rider drawing attention to tho blameworthy practice of sending ships to sea before they had been inclined and their stability calculated. The inquiry, which was most critical and exhaustive, lasted a fortnight. The Spectator questions if Sydney and Ta smania were equally earnest in the exclusion of the convicts fi'em the Pacific as other colonies. The British embassy had an audience with the Sultan to-day, and was received by His Majesty with great cordiality. Home, Oct. 4. The report current yesterday that the Pope was seriously ill, is now proved to have been unfounded. It is announced from the Vatican that His Holiness is in good health, Madkid, Oct. 5. It has transpired that the Spanish Government has sent a communication to the French Government, demanding satisfaction for the treatment accorded to King Alfonso by the Parisians during his recent visit to the French capital. Paris, Oct. 5. , It is announced to-day that General Thebaudin has resigned the position of Minister of War in the French Cabinet. Oct. 6. As reparation to Spain for the insults offered by the Parisians to King Alfonso during his recent visit to this city, an official journal in its issue of to-day announces the authenticity of the apology made to the King by President Grcvy in the name of France on the 29th ult,, and which was subsequently published by the newspapers.
