THE PROPOSED BOROUGH OF TEMUKA.
TO THE EDITOE, SlB,— Having seen u letter in your issue of the 6th October,’B3, re the above Borough I find that my name has been in it very conspicuously, and as far as “ Truthful ’James” goes be is quite out of it, as the statement which he has... made about the natter is incorrect; In the first p’ace, as to the. counter petition being taken up by men (who are immediately employed by the Board. I distinctly deny it, as I am only a Nightman ..and is in no way employed by the Board, As r to my superior officers, the “ Inspector of Nuiftances” and also the Chairman and members -of the Temuka Road Board with interfering ia the matter, they are not to blame in any particular manner. As to me in saying M Look at Waimote,” ia the state it was in at the present time, was not from any conversation with Mr Sinclair that I received the ' information from, and it is only a short time ago that it was reported in one of our valuable papers in this district that since they had 1 made it into a borough they had petitioned the Governor to retrace their steps and asking to be put back again upon the Road Board. As to my information,, if "‘Truthful James” . comes to me I will tell him where I got it from; and before coming I distinctly deny that the Chairman or the Clerk had any hand in it whatsoever. The member who first told me is Mr James Austin, one of our valuable men, and as far as that Is concerned it was not through any point of him in telling me so that I gained my information from. There is also another little point in “Truthful James’s” letter re finding of letter one night in the rubbish at the rear of the Road Board office, etc. I would like to know from him if the same letter got astray and got into his rubbish first, so as to return it privately to tbe Road Board office himself, and for .“Truthful James ” not to get himself into the ‘ scrape as well. As to the matter being transmigrated from the Chairman to the Clerk, and the Clerk to the “ Poor Nightman,” you will have to blame mo for all that has happened, and do not put it upon the shoulders of tbe Chairman or Clerk of the Road Beard. The counter petition which has been signed, you will find that their are over 60 names in it which signed the former petition, and as most of them say they were ignorant of what they were signing for (which I can prove if k required) am very sorry that they done it, and if required to sign “ Truthful James’s ” petition in favor of the Borough again, ha would find himself minus of over fifty who signed. If “Truthful James” is a ratepayer (as I doubt he ie not) and has been only a short time in Hhe township of Wallingford, 'and also is a man of extraordinary eloquence, 1 hope be will excuse any of the foregoing
stateraenta. And as far as the ratepayers of the township of Arowhenua are concerned, they will do their utmost so as not to get their township into their proposed Borough, as no doubt they would have a nice nibble in way of reserves to start from, etc., .and have their Borough in Wallingford. As to a certain class of Number 10, who are the big people of Temuka are the promoters of the Borough ; they are most of them not even ratepayers, but are only sneeking for billets under a little influence by their influential friends. In conclusion, “Mr Editor,” as I am only a poor Nightman, without going to Judge Johnston for him to Judge the case, I may take it upon myself to bring in a verdict of “ No Borough.”—Yours, etc., George Hobbs. Temuka, Bth October, 1883.
