The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1883. THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Geraldine County Council at its last meeting, did what it ought to haye done long ago ; that is, agreed to pay its share of the cost of the Eangitata bridge ; for which purpose it resolved to strike a rate of £d in the £. We have told them all along they would have to do it, and now our words have come true. There are a few things we would like to know, however. We wouldlike to know:—first: What have all the deputations that went to Ashburton from time to time cost ? Secondly: What will the inspection of the bridge by two Engineers cost? And thirdly; How much must be paid for interest on the money which has been kept so long trom the

Ashburton County Council. If we knew this we could tell the ratepayers how' much they will be out of pocket through the muddling of their representatives m the Council. The ratepayers will not forget this when the next election comes on. THE TIMARU HERALD. We have received the following letter from Timaru : TO THE EDITOR Sib, —I have read your excellent article on Timaru Industries. You omitted to mention one important industry, that is, a Soap and Candle Factory, started at Saltwater Creek. You deserve our sincere thanks in Timaru for the way in which you showed up the fallacy of starting two Woollen Companies. I have handed round your paper amongst those interested in the advancement of industries, and it is their intention to have it read at our meeting. You aie quite right in blaming our local papers for their neglect of our cause, I will tell you what the Herald did not long since, The Secretary to the Woollen Factory Company forgot to insert in the Hera'd an advertisement calling % meeting. He went next day and apologised, and asked for a reporter to be sent to that evening’s meeting. He was bluffly told that as lie did not advertise no report of the meeting would appear, and sure enough no reporter attended. I think that shows that the Herald takes no interest in encouraging local industries Yours, etc., Anii-Olique We have frequently pointed out that the Herald absolutely ignores such trifling things as local institutions, but we really did not believe it would goto the extent of refusing to report a meeting of this kind because it was not advertised. The Timaru Herald is the curse of the town and district, and it will long remain so, because the people will support it instead of supporting those who work truly and honestly in their interest. We are glad, however, that Timaru is making tremendous efforts to go ahead in spite of the Herald, and if the people stick together well they will be able to do it.
