Arrived—Ship Hertha, from' Lyttelton (May 31st) ; Anazi, from : Timaru (May 24th), reports having 'jettisoned seventy tons of cargo. The remainder was severely damaged. At a public meeting to-day for the election of Lord Major, Alderman R, N, Fowler was chosen for 1 that office, despite the usage of the livery. O’Donnell was committed for trial foi the murder of Carey, at Port Elizabeth, At a meeting to-day of the Irish Convention,'now being at Leeds, Mr Parnell’s executive was elected, and ,'it was resolved that active exertions should be used in connection with the: approaching municipal elections. Ijfitor. O’Donnell has been committed for; trial, Messrs Fullerton and Pryor, American lawyers have been engaged to defend him. Eight thousand dollars: have been subscribed towards the defence; fund. An extensive conspiracy has been detected in St Petersburg. One hundred; and fifty'officers have been arrested as, being implicated, and a large quantity 1 of arms, gunpowder, and bombs have been seized. China persists in her claim to the left bank of the Red River, and that a neutral zone shall be assured on the right bank, The London night police are now armed witli revolvers. Sept, 30. A gunpowder explosion at Fillena has destroyed sixteen houses, and caused the loss of sixteen lives. At a Conference of the Irish Land League authorities, held at Leeds, under the presidency of Mr Parnell, improved organisation machinery was agreed to, A public meeting was held in the evening, attended by a large number of English sympathisers. Mr Parnell was absent through a cold. In a riot at Omagh, several Orangemen and Leaguers were wounded, and a number of arrests have been made. Oct. 2. Telegrams to hand from Switzerland state that Miss Booth, who was recently expelled from Charlesworth, with other members of the Salvation Army, had been brought up for trial on a charge of creating a public distar banco and acquitted. By an explosion of gunpowder at Sieges, in California, forty Chinamen were killed, 1 There appears to be now some prospect of France modifying its scheme for the establishment of convict settlement in the Pacific. 1 :, The first Victorian Loan was redeemed to-day. i Oct. 2. ■ ‘ The Chinese Viceroy has complained to the European authorities at Canton regarding the result of the trial of a European, named Logan for the murder of a coolie. Owing to the excited feeling of the populace business is entirely pended,At a Tory meeting at Birmingham, at which there was an immense attendance, resolutions condemning the Government were passed. The Daily News expresses the opinion that it is hardly possible that the free trade party can long remain in the minority in Victoria. Professor Dickey, in a letter to the Times, contends that the action of Mr Service in preventing the Irish informers from landing in Australia was in defiance of the law. Paris, Sept. 29. King Alfonso was received to day by President Grevy. He was hooted by the people along the entire route to the President's 1 mansion. Official despatches from Tonquin state that since the recent defeat the ‘ Blackflags ’ retired from Songkoi, apparently fearing further encounters with the French troops. Oct. 1, It has transpired that President Grevy has apolouised in the name of France to King Alfonso, for the manner in which His Majesty was received by the people on his arrival here. The President made the apology as the King was almost indignant, and was preparing to depart immediately.
Later. King Alfonso left to-day for Madrid, notwithstanding the request of President Grevy that ho should remain a day longer. The French Pi ess generally deplore the outrage on the King, and warmly condemn the conduct of the people of this city. Latest intelligence from Tonquin states that the combined French expedition has left Hanoi and Haiphong to operate against the Anaraite position at Bacninh. . ' Calcutta., Sept. 29. Intelligence is to hand from Cabul that further fighting has taken place between the Ameer’s troops .and the rebel Ghilgris, resulting in the defeat of the former with heavy loss. New York, Sept. 29. The ship Harold, from Boston to Wellington, put hack to repair damages sustained during the recent succession of heavy gales. ■ MaDBID, Oct; 1. The report of the discourtesy shown to King Alfonso by the inhabitants of Paris, have created much dissatisfaction and ill-feeling towards the French in this city. Anti-French cries have been raised by the populace, and placards posted in various parts of the city. The French Embassy is under military protection, Great preparations are being made for an ovation to the King on his return, Hong Kong, Oct, 1. News is to hand from Canton that a European, named Logan, who shot a Chinaman in an affray which took place in that city in August, has been tiied for murder and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. The Chinese populace have expressed great discontent at the leniency of the Coart, and much uneasiness prevails in the city. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Oct. 1. In the divorce suit Bolam v Bolam, the jury were unable to agree upon a verdict, and were discharged. An alarming occurrence took place at the Bank of Victoria tin t afternoon. H. Thomas, customer of the branch at Heathcote, where he carries cn business, entered the city office and mounted a table in the centre of the chamber, shouting, ‘ Revenge,’ then, drawing a revolver, attempted to commit suicide, firing first at the ceiling, then. at Ids head, inflicting a serious wound, which, however, is not expected to prove fatal. Oct. 2. Harry Thomas, who attempted to commit suicide at the ißank of Victoria in tins city yesterday, had a grievance against the manager of the Branch Bank at Heathcote, Richard Corbett was brought up at the Police Court to-day, and committed for trial l on a charge of robbing the Commercial Bank of Australia on the night of the 18th ult, The case will he heard at the Supreme Court on the 15th inst.
At a meeting of the Melbourne Presbytery to-day, Dr Morrison tabled a motion declaring that the resolution passed by members of the Scots’ Church at a meeting held last Wednesday, deciding to secede from the Presbyterian Church of Victoria and revert to the position previous to the act of union, was irregular and ultra vires. Sydney, Oct. 1. The annual demonstration of the Eight Hours’ League is taking place today. There is an enormous attendance, and the weather is fine. The ship Delaware from London with immigrants has arrived. The doctor is prostrated with fever, and the ship has been quarantined.
