DESTRUCTION OF BEACONS AT KAWHIA.
The Wellington correspondent of the Christohnrch Press, telegraphing on Friday l'ii*t, snyn :—Ministers have been in closo Cabinet all day, considering the Kawhia native difficult* and the best course to adopt. Full information wna received from Mr Butler (Mr- Bryce'i Private Secretary), who arrived by the Hinemoa this morning. After a careful reviow of all the features in the case, including the various surrounding circumstances, on which it would be indiscreet to touch at present, the Government arrived at th* decision to send without delay a strong force of Armed Constabulary to Kawhia, and to establish a permanent military post at that place. With this object the Hinemoa will leave shortly for Opunake, and will embark the constabulary thence, a telegraph order having been already sent to the commanding officer to draft off the required force in readiness for shipment. Mr Bryce has just started overland for Taranaki, wherej he will be piked up by the Hinemoa. He will attend Mete Kingi's funeral ia passing as a murk of respect to the distinguished loyal chief. It is intended to send 110 picked men of tho A C. force to Kawhia on Monday, and to proeeed at once with t''e construction of necessary outbuildmea etc. The destroyed beacons wilt bu immediately replaced, and Tawhiao and : his accomplices will have plain intimation that any further int rference on their part will be promptly and severely denlt with. It is believed that Tawhino intendpd next to destroy the buoy*, if this outrage wat passed over unnoticed, but his hearl failed him on receiving a stern warning as to the consequences of his conduct Then the Maniapotos are grf-atly pleaseci that the Government have taken imme diate action in the matter, and they ha?< been eager to disovow complicity ir Tawhiao's action or approval of it. Th< principal chiefs of the Maniapoto hav< been qimk to tender assurances o loyalty and cordial co operation. Tin establishment of a stronj; constubulur post and force at K:iwhia will he a grea convenience in view of further develop ments from our side, and there is n doubt Tawhiao is already conscious * having committed n grave blunder i policy and having played, right iuto ih hands of the Government.
