ENGLISH. AND FOREIGN. v'i :' London, Sept. 27. The number of ' carcases that are damaged in the shipment of frozen meat by the Mataura, is 300. The cause is attributed to the meat having been frozen while warm. it is reported that Prior Vaughan will succped his brother as Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney. Sept. 28. A rumor is current here that Mr Charles Parnell has been shot. The report, the origin of which has not been traced, caused some excitement, but has not gained much credence. , at Dungannon yesterday were largely attended by Mr
Parnell's followers, and, notwithstanding the presence of a /large number of Orangemen, nothing approaching the nature of a riot occurred, the pres2nce of strong bodies of constabulary and military having been sufficient to preserve order. Later. The Canadian Budget shows a surplus of seven million dollars. The reported shooting of Mr Parnell at the Dungannon meeting proves to be false. The Rev Mr Shaw was accorded a public reception to-day at Exeter Hall on his return from Madagascar. There was a very large attendance of sympathisers and the general public. Mr Shaw gave a lengthy narrative of the treatment he received at the hands of the French authorities, showing he bad been subjected to considerable ill-usage on shore and on board the war ships which took him to Reunion. The London Press are unanimous in urging that Mr Shaw demand from the French Government reparation for the treatment he received.
News is to hand of a fatal agrarian oatrage in Ireland, the victim being a landlord in Mayo, named Mr Crotty. No clue to the perpetrator of the murder has been obtained.
O'Donnell was again brought up at the Bow street Police Court to-day. Mrs Carey gave evidence of the murder, and testified that O'Donnell, after he had committed the deed, stated he had been sent out to assassinate Carey.
The frozen meat ex Mataurahas been sold for soap boilers' purposes at a haltpenny per lb. None of it was unmarkitable for ordinary consumption. Money is cheapening, and colonial securities are rising in value. The prospects are considered good for the Ade-. laide Loan on Tuesday.
The British Association has voted £IOO for providing scientific apparatus for any expedition to New Guinea, of which the Council may approve. Messrs Healey, Small and O'Connor, M.P.'s, have been assailed at their meetings, and the campaign in Ulster has been defeated.
The Rev Mr- Shaw's case, and the account of his colonial adventures are exciting strong public feeling against the action of France. The French Press adopt a very defiant tone, Paris, Sept. 27.
It is reported that the Chinese Envoy has definitely declined the French proposals for the settlement of the Tonquin difficulty. Great secrecy has been observed regarding the progress of negotiations, and no official announcement lhasyet been made. ! Constantinople, Sept. 29. Telegrams to band from Sophia state that a large number of arms are beinS imported into Bulgaria. The arms arje declared to be of Russian manufacture, ana it is rumored that' the Russian Government is cognisant of the movement, Berlin, Sept. 28. The,, statue (Germania) which has been erected at Neidorwald was unveiled with great Ceremony to-day by the Emperor William, in the presence of an immense concourse of people, The whole of the Imperial army was represented, -and all the villages and castles along the river Rhine were illuminated.
