DRAINAGE OF GERALDINE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I am glad to see in your issue of the 6th a letter signed ' Drainpipe' on the above subject, as it shows that people are beginning to think seriously about draining this township. I will ' throw out this suggestion. In England there are Engineers who pay special attention to railways and are called Railway Engineers, others Marine Engineers, others Sewerage or DrainageEngineers—each a distinct and separate branch of the same profession. A few years since the Melbourne Government required Melbourne to be drained. What was done ? They 6<mt to England for the best Professional Sewerage Engineer, M. Clark. The London Metropolitan Engineer came out and originated the present system upon which Melbourne has been drained. He afterwards came to Christchurch and inaugurated the difficult system of draining our city. Since thon the works here have been carried out most successfully under the able superintendence of Mr Napier Bell. Now I will suggest to the Board of Health, wonld it not he wise to conwith Mr Bell before any plan is decided upon for the drainage of our town? In these days there are all sorts ot new contrivances, first for allowing the sewrage to go in one set of pipes and the storm water in another. Again there are certain contrivances for connecting the closet with the drainpipes. All these important matters only a Sewerage Engineer is acquainted with. I cannot think that the drainage of Geraldine can be an expensive affair, but whatever it is, let us withhold spending any money until a satisfactory plan has first been obtained. I hear a public meeting is to be called to consider the subject, a very wise suggestion. 1 hope, however, this meeting will not be called until* a good plan or plans, with the cost of the same, can be laid before the ratepayers, showing at the same time where the drainage is to empty itself.— I am, etc., C. G: Tripp. Orari Gorge, 6th Sept, 1883.
