BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was hold last Thursday. The following is a report of the proceedings in reference to schools in this district. TEMUKA. A telegram was read from the Chair—msn of the Teniuka School Committee, dated that morning, stating that the roof of the new school building was leaking badly, and requesting the Architect to be sent out to see it. With reference to this school, the Chairman stated the tenders tor fencing and gates being reasonable, abaut L 25 each, he had authorised their acceptance The architects are to be instructed to examine the roof and require the contractor to stop the leaks. A letter was real from tiie Committee, asking the Board to adycrtisu for a second master for .their District High School. Copies of tivo letters addressed to the Committee by Mr Meager, second master, were alsi> received ; the first one resigning his appointment on the ground of ill health, the second withdrawing his resignation and asking for three months' , leave of absence,

It was decided to leave the inatt'T in the hands of the Secretary, he to take the necessary steps to keep up the staff. NORTH ORAM SCHOOL. A letter was read from Mr C. £>. Totton, written at the request of several residents of the old North Orari district, protesting against the removal of the school buildings there, as there would be 20 children for the school if it wen? opened again as an aided school. With regard to the letter, it was remarked that it came too late, and also that 20 children where not enough to establish a school lor. WAITOHI FLAT SCHOOL. The Inspector having recommended the dismissal of the teacher of this school, and the recommendation having been forwarded to the Committee, the Committee now wrote requesting the Board not to dismiss the teacher, urgiig that he had not had time to work up the school, but had nude a great improvement in it. and the residents were very desirous of his being retained. On the motion of Mr Wakefield, seconded by Mr Gray, it was resolved to suspend action until after the next ordinary examination. WINCHESTER SCHOOL.

The Chairman of the Committee wrote renewing an application for a fence along the western boundary of the school site, there being a stable yard on the adjoining section, with a very insufficient fence between them. Also requesting the Board to purchase three quarteracre sections adjoining the school (now for sale, but of which the price was not known, theowner being away at present), in order to secure a playground. Also asking for a grant of £6 to square the incidental account, it having been overdrawn to the extent of £5 10s lid over two years ago, and the Committee had been unable to save anything out of their allowance to reduce tho debt.

As to tbc request to purchase land, it was agreed that the Board could do nothing until the pri-jo was ascertained, and with respect to the other two matters, it was resolved on the motion o.? Mr Wakefield, seconded Ly Mr Goldsmith—' That the Chairman be authorised to have the fencing at Winchester school done, and that the Committee be informed that the Board are reconsidering the whole question of incidentals with a view of increasing tho amount, but that they cannot grant any sum to recoup the overdraft.' ORARI BRIDGE SCHOOL. The Orari Bridge Committee applied for a grant of about L 8 to enable them to repair a fence, to do some shingling, to procure a gate for the school, and (o do same planting. The Chairman was authorised to inquire into the matter, and carry out the repairs if funds were available, KAKAHU BUSH SCHOOL, No communication was received from Mr Wigley as regards the above school site. THE LATE ARCHITECT. Messrs Perry and Perry advised the Board to appeal against the judgment in the case of Duval v. the Board, but it was decided not to do go. SALARIES. It was proposed by Mr Gray, seconded by Mr Goldsmith, and carried—' That a Committee consisting of the Rev G. Barclay and Messrs Wakefield and Walcot, be appointed to revise the arrangement and salaries of the teaching staff and apportionment of incidentals, in view of the increased revenue of the Board.'
