GERALDINE BEAGLES.
The final meet of the season took place on Tuesday last at Raukapuka, on the estate of Mr Postleth waite, M.H.R. The weather in the morning was rather warm, hut later on it got more 'pleasant and agreeable for hunting. One of the largest I 1 fields of the season assembled on this occasion, including several ladies, many of the latter going straight. About halfpast ten a move was made for the old racecourse paddock, and no sooner had they arrived at the trysting place than a merry chorus proclaimed the fun had begun, and puss, driven from cover, steered her course for some distance in a southerly E direction. Then doubling hack to her haunts she made a short ring round the \ paddock and van through a fence on to | the road leading to Geraldine. This she ! followed for some distance, passing i by the Presbyterian Church, and, hard pressed she swung round to i the right and entered the plantaI tion adjoining Mr Cunningham’s re--1 sidence. There a check look place, and hares being numerous, the hounds were whipped off and a return was made to the trysting place again, where another hare was soon found, puss taking a line for some distance in the direction of Omri. Then she doubled and ran across a paddock towards the lower end of the Geraldine crossing, through a fence, and got
into the Wnihi riverbed Thehounds hotehy pursuing her, she loft the riverbed and returned to the former paddock, and after a splendid run of 25 minutes was run into. Moat of the field were in at the death. A short spell for the horses, and the hounds being eager for [another run, a cast was made near the scene of the last kill, and a strong hare was found. And now began the run of the day. Away she ran towards the Raukapuka smithy, crossing the creek close by, and thence j in the direction of the lower paddocks, when she made for the open greund and raced in view with hounds dose to her pads for some lime, as they could not get dear, the pace being a slapping one. Puss then swung round to the right and entered a tussocky swamp, where a slight check for a few minutes occurred, but she was soon put on her pins again by the game Utile pack, led by 1 Pointer’ and old .Royal,’and after making another plucky effort to baffle her tormentors, was at last run into and killed, after one of the best runs at Raukapuka this season and across a capital line of country. Time, 30min. The party now proceeded homewards. Moat of them were hospitably entertained to a sumptuous lunch at Raukapuka, by Mr and Mrs R. H. Pestlethwaite, to which full justice was done. During the runs there was some very good jumping, not only confined to high gnrse fences and rails, but also barb wire Only one rider came to grief, but was soon in the saddle again. The hunting season now ended has been a most successful one, scoring 51 kills. Tbe dub is to be congratulated this season for not having one claim sent to it for any damage to fences, or other loss occasioned by accident oi otherwise, and the club is greatly indebted to the farmers and others for the very kind and generous manner in which they have allowed hunting on their respective lands. The worthy master is also to be congratulated on having such a successful season, and his really splendid pack of hounds are a credit to him, and to his able mastership and mangeraenb the club is very much indebted.
