THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
We have on several occasions pointed out the absurdity of the proceedings of our County Council with regard to the paying of its share of the cost of the Rangitata Bridge’s construction. On the first occasion Mr Tripp held that it should be paid, but he was pooh-pooed. One man wanted a couple of Engineers to examine the work ; another wanted to wait until a flood came and tested it } and another was for sending a deputation to Ashburton to argue the point. We pointed, out that all this was useless, and that it would be as well to pay cheerfully what must be paid at any rate. Still the deputation went to Ashburton, but the reception they met with makes us think they will not be in a harry to go again. From an amusing skit—in which thpy have been made fun of—published in the Lyttelton Times, we gather that the Ashburton Council declined to discuss the question with them, and so they had to return as they went, A great many will say it served them right, though they might have received more courtesy. It is no wonder the County Council is unpopular.
