Danger of Wearing Colorid Stock INGS. —Alexander Lamb, age 1 72, died unexpectedly at South Wairpa. He got a severe scratch on his leg, and the dye from hid knitted colored stocking produced bloodpoisoning:
Fatal Fire.—A fire broke out at Parawai, Auckland, last Saturday night, in a s ore oicupied by Henry Wo d. The building which was uninsured, was totally destroyed Wood and his wife,were severely burned and are now in the Hospital, and a female child five months old was burned to deatb. The fire originated by a pot containing coal-tar boiling over. Pedestrianism. Sora« time ago Mr Alfred Austin, of Dune Jin, announced that be would give £IOO to anv man in Australia who would beat Young Scott in a walking match of 24 hours or 43 hours. A Mi Seymour, of Melbourne, is now on bis way over to accept the challenge on behalf of tbo well-known pedestrian Edwards.
Sly Gbog Selling.—At Auek'and on Friday last, Miss Amy Swonboro, tobacconist, was fined £lO and costs for slv grog selling. The principal witness was a Fij an planter named Miller. The Court was crowded to excess, as interesting disclosures were anticipated. The defendant admitied her real name was Mrs Healy, and believed her husband was in Canterbury. AOCIDKNT WITH GUNPOWDER.—At Waimate, on Saturday, a lad named Wild, whil-t playing with some other boys, nearly lost his life through an explosion of gunpowder. He was much injured about the face, legs, and lower parts of his body, his trousers being almost completely torn off. He was immediately taken to the hospital and attended to by Dr Hassell, who does not consider his life in danger.
Sooth Obabi School Committee.—This Committee held their ordinary monthly meeting on the 20ih August. Present— Messrs It A Barker (Cha'rman, Bissett, MoLeod, Binskin and G-errard. The minute* of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman stated that hs ; had let contracts for the epoutin? and shingle carting, and had applied to the Board for an addition to the school. The Board had con* tented to favorably entertain the application as soon as they are financially in a position odo to. The teacher reported the average attendance to be 48, attributing the low arerage this month to the fact of fire children hating left the district. He suggested the advisability of starting a library in connection with the school. It was resolved— 1 That Mr Fraser be thankod for his suggestion re library, which, however, the Committee fear cannot be got up in connection with the school for want of space and funds. They would give their hearty support to the startof such an institution if taken up bv the dittnct.' Some discussion took place about the insurance of schoolroom, but as there was no circular from the Board the matter dropped, the Chairman agreeing to m<ke enquiries a 8 to terms of insurance. After passing sccounts amounting to £3 10s 6d, the meet* ing adjourned to the third Monday in Sep* teuber.

Zealand Shipping Company punctually J W abvertised date, Saturday next- As has been previously mentioned the passenger accommodation of this Vessel has' been much im'proved upon, and those who book to London by her may be assured of a safe speedy, and very comfortable passage home. From an abstract, taken from her log of the last run home, the actual time was 43 days 3 houi t and 45 minutes, and her able commander, Captain John Kelly, hopes to make even a better record this coming voyage. . The abstract referred to shows the steamer to have run 6965 nautical miWs from Lyttelton to Rio Janeiro, 2691 miles from Rio to St Vincent, 2262 miles from Sb Vincent to Plymouth, 295 miles from there to Gravesend, thus making the distance f;oni Lyttelton to Gravesend, via Rio and St Vincent, to be 12,213 miles, or Lyttelton lo Plymouth, via the ports named, .11,918 miles.—Press.

A cast was made again in sn adjoining paddock, and shortly after the game little pack scop gave tongue, and a hare came to view. After a short busrt of fifteen minutes the hounds proved too much for hrr.and she was ran into and killed. After a few minutes' spell for the horses, another hare was found, which went away at a rattling pice with the hounds close on her heels. 4fter crossing oyer several paddocks she made for the downs on 'he Woodside estate, in the direction of Mr Cameron's farm. Reaching he e a che k took place, and eventually pusj gave the hounds the slip, after an exc ting run of ibout thirty minutes, and let us hope that (his good bare mar lire to give the beagles another such a run. It now being two o'clock the bounds were whipped off, and the party rsturnd to Woodside, where they were most hoipitab j entertained by Mr and Mrs Slack J to a sumptuous lunch, to whioh ample justice wi • done. Some of the fences met with in the run were rather stiff and one or two riders e»me to grief, but only a slight shaking resulted. The hunt was one of the best that has taken place at Woodside. The last meet of the season will take phse at Raukapuli o-day.
