TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting ef the above Committee was held last Tuesday night. Present—Messrs Gray (Chairman), O’flalloran, Blyth, Brown, Kirk, and Bolton. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESfONDENCE. Correspondence was read from the Education Board in reference to the resumption of duties by Mrs Bowe, and other matters, and stating that if the contractor of the school allowed his plans to be surreptitionsly abstracted it was a matter between himself and the offender ; also in reference to the introduction of the district High School regulations ; also intimating that L4O a year would be allowed to the master for house rent, HEAD MASTER’S RETORT. From Mr Wood, head teacher, stating that the attendance for the month was as follows :—Number on the roll : boys, 213 ; girls, 191 ; total, 404, Highest attendance: boys, 158; girls, 124; total, 282. Strict average attendance ; boys, 135 ; girls, 190 ; total, 325. He heard that whooping cough and sickness were still prevalent, and were reducing the attendance. Mr Meagher was absent through illness. The Chairman explained that owing to the prevalent sickness be had, with the consent of several members of the Committee, closed the school for a week, The Chairman’s action was endorsed, THB HIGH SCHOOL. Mr Wood, head teacher, attended the meeting by invitation, and said he would not like the secondary courses to commence until he entered the new school; It would be necessary to have s good staff*. A second teacher was necessary to take bis place in teaching tho sth and 6th standards whilst he was engaged in giving instruction to the high school class. He could make a
start as soon as a guoil competent assistant was given to him, and intended to devote two hours a day to teaching the high school class. lie expected that he weald have between 12 and 15 pupils attending the high school, who would be taught Latin, French, Euclid, aud Algebra, He had not decided what time of the day he would set aside for the work yet, but he felt sure he could find time. Mrs Rowe was a very good infant mistress, he would not desire bstter, and as in the nsw school the infant department would be very much separate from the remainder, it was well to have such a good infant teacher as Mrs Rowe. One of the qualifications which he would like the second teacher to have was that he should be able to sing. It was most desirable.
Mr Wood then retired, and after some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Brown—* That the Secretary write to the Board of Educaion asking them to advertise at once for a second teacher at a salary of LI SO per annum, one who could teach singing preferred.’ RESIGNATION OF MR PEARPOINT. A letter was read from Mr R. H. Pearpoint resigning bis position as a member of the Committee in consequence of leaving the district. On the motion of Mr Bolton, seconded by Mr Brown, it was resolved that Mr Pearpoint’s resignation be accepted with regret, Mr W. G. Asomall was elected as a member of tha Committee to fill the seat rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Pearpoint. MONETARY. It was resolved— * That the Secretary write to the Board of Education Hsking them to forward a cheque for the rent, as per account sent on August I.’ Accounts to the amount of L2 13i 4d were passed for payment. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Gray, Blytb, and Kirk were appointed a visiting Committee for the month. The meeting then terminated.
